Acapella Groups (Current Students)

I have been looking at Yale and am really fascinated by the whole rush system for acapella groups. How harsh is it for cuts? And what is the perception of these groups on campus?

I know this isn't the traditional "Chance Me" thread, but I'm just wondering how there groups factor into Yale's social scene!

THANKS!

How harsh are cuts? Depends on the crop of auditioners and the no. of slots any particular group needs to fill. Some groups have higher standards – some lesser. It really depends. I suppose if one is really terrible, well…

The groups are an essential block on campus b/c it seems everyone knows someone in one. They are great entertainment. Viewed very highly.

It is very competitive to get into these groups. The rush process is time consuming involving auditions, call-backs, singing dinners (where you hear a fuller repertoire), mandatory socializing afterwards, and multiple meals with each group. Now multiply that by as many times as the number of groups you rush. “Above average” singers won’t even make it to get a call-back audition. Some students go through this whole process many times over and come up empty handed on rush night.

The groups do sound great and the travel experience one gets with the top tier groups is phenomenal with one or two international tours a year.
