i just looked at last years stats and
slightly over 40% of students who applied to the
college of science got accepted.

is this true? or am i just totally crazy?

that's what I had seen for the CIT....and if you look at the common data set, the female acceptance is like %50...no idea.

overall admissions rate was 32 percent iirc...if you consider 4 out of 10 people accepted high then yes I guess 40 percent is high

you also have to factor in self selection - the average CMU applicant might not be the same as the average college applicant

and of course the female acceptance rate is higher (affirmative action, the ratio, etc)

did you expect a ivy like 1 out of 10 rate or something?

you'd to better to look at the average statistics for admitted students (SAT ranges, GPA, rank, etc) to gauge chances and stuff - acceptance rates really aren't that meaningful in the end (after all, say they accept 90 percent of students but everyone who applied was a super star....it would mean nothing)

as you know at CMU selectivity varies with the school, and some are a lot harder than others to get into (in particular CS, Fine Arts and Tepper).

Keep in mind that 40% rate for MCS will be more like lower 30's this year since CMU had a 19% increase in applications and their overall rate will be in the twenties. It's still not bad compared to other schools.

"did you expect a ivy like 1 out of 10 rate or something"....actually about 7 or 8 years ago CS acceptance rate (before the dotcom burst) was about 12-14%. Tepper last year was 17% and should be a good amount lower this year. Not quite 10% but still pretty tough...

I don't know if CMU is known for its Liberal Arts education, so that can account for the high acceptance rate, but if you look at Tepper or the Computer Sci school, it's quite low

Overall admit rate is high because overall yield is low. Similarly, Chicago has a yield of 34.3%, so it also has a high acceptance rate (38.5%).

Male admit rate: 31.7%
Female admit rate: 37.5%

Male yield: 22.3%
Female yield: 22.5%

well of course for SCS (they are top 5 for computer science as you likely know), I was referring to the cumulative rate

So in conclusion,

CMU does have a pretty high acceptance rate but will fall this year due to the 19% increase in applicants (but again this increase could be heavily weighted in only a few schools).

IN all honesty CCers, i'm scared Sh**less because my counsellor and i forgot to apply to a real Safety School. I applied to 10 schools and CMU is the one with the highest accpetance rate. Could u please give me a some opinions on my stats? plus what u think of my chances? (in averabe, over 12 people are accepted from Hong Kong International School every year)

I applied to the school of science and wrote a very specific (good, i was told) essay on why.

GPA-3.7 (top ten 10% in my school)

*SAT1 *
Math-770 CR-670 WR-560

*SAT2 *
Math (2c)- 800
Chem-700
Bio-710

I know my writing score is abysmal (i dont know why...). But I took Honors English during my junior year and am currently taking AP English. I have A's for both courses... Hopefully this will show them that i can write?

Thanks again.

in case

(I have over 8 pages of great recommendations, ranked in the top 2% in a big math modelling competion sponsored by AMA and INFORMS, I brought the USABO to my school for the first time (i also taught 20 kids and 9 of them, including myself passed into the top decile), I am a school Senator, Varsity Athlete, Cellist)

I think you have a pretty good shot. A better shot than me. Um...about that safety school. Is there anywhere that is good/you're interested in that is still accepting applications?

Try a rolling admissions school, where you may be able to apply up to a few weeks before classes begin (if there is still room).

Thanks everyone.
Here is a purely subjective question. Seeing that the college of science accepts around 48% of students. (taking into account this years HUGE INCREASE in applicants)

What u guys think of my chances?

according to your 48% (although i'm not entirely sure how you arrived at that), and the 50-50-90 rule....you've got about a 90% chance of getting rejected, and a 10% chance of acceptance. if you get accepted, you'll receive about 120% nonmerit scholarship.

but in honesty...you've got a decent chance of getting in. dont worry, there's nothing you can do but wait.

and just wondering, are you international?

what is the 50-50 -90 rule?
(im not international.)

(i calculated 48% from last years stats)

lol, the 50-50-90 rule is like an offshoot of murphy's law. the rule states "if there is ever a scenario where the chances are 50-50 in your favor, there is a 90% chance that you will be wrong". lol

and i thought you were international because you mentioned hong kong international

OOO haha. THanks..

Yes im WAY OUT THERE in Hong Kong but im an American Citizen...

(btw that murphy's law is ridiculously pessimistic hahahah)
