Acceptance Letter and Aid Question

I lost my letter, but does anyone remember what the acceptance letter starts with? Is it "Warmest Congratulations!" or just "Congratulations!"?

Also, I got about 25 grand in money from Pomona, but i'm pretty sure I don't fall in the "needy" category... is this because they are giving me a merit scholarship? Or does Pomona just have really funny standards for "needy" cuz they have so much money? Or did they just accidentally add a zero at the end? xD

It starts with "Warmest Congratulations!"

and the aid?

the Aid comes in the the same big folder

Pomona does not award merit scholarships. If you have any questions about your FA package, you should contact the College.

What was your EFC?

I was really happy with my FA, because they even covered a huge chunk of my EFC! And Pomona doesn’t do merit scholarships, only need based. That scared me at first, b/c I thought that would mean less money, but I was wrong! And also, no loans in the FA package.

Pomona joined the growing ranks of schools that eliminated loans in the FA package.

They said my EFC was about 3000 less than what was stated in FAFSA, and they covered 100% of my needs (44 grands a year). They are lot more generous than other schools. I’m not sure how generous they are as opposed to other schools like Ivy, but I honestly can not picture any other colleges giving me more money than that.

Pomona really strives to not only make a college education as affordable for as many people as possible, but also inexpensive beyond the threshold of people able to afford it.

hmm really?

so how does fin aid at pomona compare to like top non hypsm unis?

pomona’s aid is soo much better than everybody else’s…

my efc is lower for them than any other school I got in to (vandy, emory, washu, duke, ut austin and a&m)

how does it compare to peoples fafsa efcs usually?

It seems like most people I’ve talked to on need-based financial aid here noted that Pomona gave them more money than anyone else.

Pomona actually gave me the least amount of money (compared to Georgetown, Duke, and Columbia)

trickysocksman:
Pomona gave me a couple thousand more than the FAFSA said I needed.

I heard that Pomona, in terms of financial aid, is right behind HYPS. Can anybody verify that?

They gave me 50k (1000 short of CoA) without taking into account my Cal grant of $9,708, so yeah they are very generous with their FA and stick meeting 100% of demonstrated need. Its a good thing or else I couldnt afford it :). So yeah its up there with the ivies in FA terms

It varies school to school, as every finaid office has a different formula. The students I know who came here over HYPS said aid was comparable, some higher, some lower. In the end it’s probably a wash

Financial aid takes so many different things into account (assets, income, # of kids in college, region, etc.) that it’s not uncommon for School A to give one applicant more than School B, whereas the reverse is true for another applicant.

Pomona’s financial aid gets high marks not just because of their generous initial packages, but the degree to which the office will negotiate with each individual admitted student to reach a better solution if needed.

Despite the economic downturn, Pomona’s financial aid budget will increase again this year, and they’ve made it clear that finaid is not on the table in terms of reducing costs.
