It’s almost that time. I think it is a good idea to get the general formats of the Acceptance / Non-Acceptance letters ready so that one can individualize them and notify the schools. Please bring out your Writer's Craft.

Most of the time, the schools under consideration may be more similar to one another in terms of academics and other offerings than we think. In such cases, it is harder to justify saying I chose school A because I couldn’t have excelled at school B. In these situations, how would you write to school B as to why you are not accepting their offer and choosing school A?

Non-Acceptance Letter General Format:

To accept an offer, just send an e-mail to admissions. I would think that they would care more about receiving reponses ASAP than a very fancy e-mail. Also be sure to send a nice thank you note to your interviewer. He/she were your advocate throughout this process and possibly got your name placed on the acceptance list versus the wait list or even the rejection list.

To deny a offer just say that you have decided to accept an offer from another school but was grateful to have received their offer of acceptance. It’s usually helpful to include the name of the school you are attending for their own record-keeping.

2010, I think it is important to write a thoughtful letter especially if you are not accepting the offer and your siblings may apply to that school.

I think this is a good thread… any thoughts? We shouldn’t all have the same format, because then the boarding schools (especially the ones we decline) will be like “what’s going on?”
Maybe we should all share and list ideas for declining a school because it just isn’t as good as another school (excuses).

teddy, we can have a basic framework and you can customize it to fit your needs.
