When does USMA actually start accepting/reviewing those w/o LOAs? I know that there are the 10 names for each nomination source and then the top dog gets offered the spot; and if there is an LOA then he/she doesn't count as a slot. But when a senator sends the 10 names, does USMA wait for all 10 files to be finished before determining number the #1 candidate on that list? Or is it something different?

Once all of the conditions of the LOA are met the candidate will be offered admission. LOA recipients do not compete with the others on the nomination slate - all they require is "a nomination" (they do not need to be the "top dog"). In other words, having your name on the nomination slate is all that is required to meet the nomination requirement.

Atop,

My daughter did not have an LOA but received her appointment in early January. So candidates w/o LOA's can receive appointments early, but should plan on waiting to hear.

thanks for the responses but I still don't understand the process for those without the LOA. Does USMA wait for all people on the nomination slate to finish their file before they select appointments?

Atop: see if this helps:

Atop - If you have a LOA you receive your apppointment when your file is complete and you have met all of the requirements. Admissions does not need to wait for the other 9 nominees on the nominations slate to complete their applications before they offer you an appointment. You are not competing with them for an appointment - that is the value of a LOA.

Oops - I need to read more closely. The link mom3boys posted should help.

Just a quick question. I have a LOA, I just received a nomination from Sen. Hillary Clinton's office, and I am fully qualified medically for USMA. I was told I'll hear back in Jan.-ish, but is there anything else I need to do?

First of all, congratulations! Sounds like you're close to receiving your appointment. Admissions is closed for the holidays, so you'll have to wait until after the offices are open again. And just because you were notified that you received a nomination doesn't mean the slate was sent to West Point yet.

We hear that staring at the mailbox helps. ;)

Haha, oh I have been. I'm excited. :D Thank you for the help!

I know that you get sent an offer of admission. I'm assuming that's the paper work I'll have to fill out and after I send that in I'll be sent my packet? Am I right or will everything come at once? Just wondering.

That's cruel! ;)

lforlaur3n,

Last year, my daughter's LOA was conditional based on her finishing what was specified in the letter as needing to be completed by a certain date. Once she completed those things, had received her MOC nomination and was medically qualified, she received her appointment. It took several weeks (even a month, if memory serves). Now is the hard part - waiting. Admissions is very busy, so it depends on their schedule.

Once you receive your appointment in the mail, admissions will send out a packet of forms that you will need to fill out.

Be patient, and make sure to enjoy your senior year. Congratulations - you're in for a wild ride now!!!

Haha i'm working on the patience thing, I was just confused as to what the procedure was because I've heard a bunch of different things from people, and my parents keep asking whats going on. Thanks very much for the help. :)
