<p>Kayla, I am not quite understanding here. Did you get into the BFA in MT program at Montclair? If so, it is like many other BFA in MT programs in that there are some general education / liberal arts requirements for the degree. So, if your parents allowed you to apply to BFA in MT programs in the first place, then I am wondering how Montclair is any different? The discussion of whether you are allowed to go to a BFA vs. a BA college is one to have before you apply. I know you have said that your dad is not too keen on you pursuing MT, but a huge chunk of your college list has been BFA in MT colleges. So, it is not true that you can't do any liberal arts at Montclair. You will do some, just like is the case if you had gotten into some of your other BFA schools such as Elon. In fact, you will likely have MORE liberal arts than had you gotten into CMU or CCM's programs, to which you applied. I imagine you have run these schools and programs by your parents first before they paid the application fees and sent you around to all these auditions in the US, yes? So, Montclair's balance of training with liberal arts is like many schools on your list and even has more liberal arts than at a few schools on your list. Examine the course catalogue and get all the information straight and then present it to your parents, OK?</p>
<p>Fabulous news Kayla. I've not looked at Montclair State since my S was interested in smaller and non-urban schools. But after seeing your news, I cruised the Montclair threads. Wow, sounds like an up and coming program and oh so close to the city. </p>
<p>Perhaps as SoozieVt says if you lay out the general education classes for your parents, and couple that with some of the details about the program posted on the Montclair thread, you can get them excited about the opportunity. </p>

I'm am so unbelievably proud of you and Montclair is a fantastic program- I'm not even just saying that, it's really small with a lot of personal attention and I have a friend who goes there for MT so if you want I can give you his sn/facebook or something. He's extremely talented and loves it.</p>
<p>I know that Montclair actually has required gen eds where you HAVE to take liberal arts courses. And I'm pretty sure that you can even take more if you really wanted to. In an academic sense of what your parents are looking for, this may actually be the perfect program for you because they have pretty stiff academic requirements as well as their performance requirements.</p>

You can decide later if that is too much, given all of your other intensive activities, and withdraw without a penalty. I know you wrote me but since you are also mentioning your questions here and since I think my advice would be useful for other students...I'll answer here. </p>
<p>First with regard to Montclair State....I looked up their Course Catalogue online. It is a pdf file. The link to it is on the Musical Theater program page. In the catalogue, on page 52 of the PDF file (which appears to be page 46 of the catalogue), it starts the outlining of the general education (liberal arts) requirements for those earning a BFA at Montclair. It explains all these requirements as well as lists course options to fufill them. I didn't read through it all as you can yourself.</p>
<p>Then on page 248 of the pdf file (which is page 242 of the catalogue), it begins all of the requirements for the various theater degree programs. Scroll until you read the ones for the BFA in MT. Familiarize yourself with this whole department. </p>
<p>You asked me if you could choose your own electives. Here is where my advice pertains to all applicants and not just you. I can't answer your question. I would have to research it it. I am not familiar with the specifics of requirements for all degrees at all colleges (I advise regular college admissions and theater or performing arts college admissions....this represents hundreds of colleges). So, first, my advice is to read through all of this yourself. This is your education and so you must explore deeply. Second, do not rely on information on a message board. The message board is better for those sharing experiences first hand, the kinds of things you can't get in a catalogue. But for the kinds of questions you are asking me, you must go to the SOURCE. So, first read the catalogue. Second, call or email personnel at the college or the department to answer all the questions you need to answer. Do not make this decision overnight. Find out everything you want and need to know from the college itself. Use the board if you want opinions from those who attend (like, "which dorm is best?" sorts of questions). Of course, the board is here as support and friendship.</p>
<p>Lastly, let's keep the acceptance thread about listing acceptances and congratulatory messages. If you have questions about a specific college, ask in the subforums on that college. </p>
<p>If you want help with your situation that is not specific to a certain college, start a thread about "needing advice". Thanks.</p>
