Is there anyone who has been accepted to a specific school in USC already, but is not being considered for a scholarship? Just wondering. I got an email saying that I am not being considered for the scholarships (I'm not surprised, though) but I am hoping that my chances of getting into SCA are not depleted by this since people are already getting acceptance letters from SCA.

Posting to bump.

My DS said that his Admissions Status Check page has PDF about acceptance to Viterbi CS but no mention of Scholarships (neither awarding nor otherwise). His stats are perfect SAT (including SAT 2); 3.98 UW GPA with good number of AP’s and all 5’s; tons of extra curriculars and awards; also NMSF (and likely NMF).

For him USC is the first choice only if he gets full scholarship (which seems to be not the case looking at the PDF), as he already got very good scholarship from Illinois CS that puts his COA below 20K.

The only acceptances that have been sent out are those with large scholarship consideration. The rest will come later. If you are not considered for a scholarship even though you applied by the deadline, you still have an extremely high chance because only few students are considered for scholarships

^Actually, sometimes students are accepted in this early wave with no mention of scholarship… and then receive a letter awarding them the Dean’s a week or so later (with no need to interview). This MAY be what has happened to ParentNH’s son!

Well, in that case it’s still a scholarship that ends up being awarded to those that are accepted early >.<

Not so sure. Actually I could not even open the file in the USConnect. I only received a letter rejecting me of top scholarships which is unbelievable because many of my friends who got weaker credentials got in. I guess I am overly confident!

I wasn’t expecting any results until March, so getting an acceptance package on Saturday was a welcome surprise! That said, I didn’t see anything about a merit scholarship enclosed, and I thought that only people who were being awarded merit scholarships were notified early? I haven’t received an email from USC confirming my acceptance(Do they do this?) or an email regarding my merit scholarship chances(nothing about getting or not getting a scholarship). I’m 100% sure that I’m not a P/T scholarship finalist b/c frankly I’m not remotely qualified, but I was wondering if the chances are good that I would be getting the Dean’s Scholarship? It would make USC a much more enticing and viable option for me. All advice/guidance is appreciated.

I’m a person who was recently admitted, got my acceptance package yesterday!

But sadly no scholarship info.

I would think that USC would have sent ALL early acceptees information about their merit scholarship.

Hopefully rumors are true and that those accepted with no scholarship will get a Dean’s scholarship later in the week!

I was also accepted without mention of scholarships. I should make NMF and be eligible for half tuition though. I wonder if I’m still being considered for Dean’s however, because Dean’s plus half tuition plus financial aid could be what allows me to go. But I remember reading NMF wasn’t stackable with other merit scholarships. Does anyone know if this is true even for Dean’s? It would be amazing if it was possible to cover 3/4 of tuition with just merit scholarships.

NMF and Dean’s cannot be stacked, but NMF automatically get an exra $1,000/year. In addition, in April there have been many posts from NMF saying that additional University scholarships of another $1,000 to $2,500 have been added. If your USC determined need indicates that you qualify for financial aid beyond your merit scholarships, additional aid will be coordinated with the NMF Presidential and other scholarships.

Wait until late April to be sure you have ALL the info.

Good luck!!!

@spaceduck
So did you guys see anything on the USConnect or did they just send a package to your home? Also, did you guys meet the scholarship consideration deadline?

Darkflamemaster, I can see DS’s letter on usc connect under application status. Dh got the package on Sat and then looked to see the same info on USC connect. There is a message that you click on to open up a PDF but I think that was posted on Friday, we just never checked that day.

Today there is also an RSVP box for admitted students to click on and make a reservation for Explore as well as a payment box to make a deposit. Still no mention of any scholarship, dean’s or otherwise.

Spaceduck, Juanitarebel, and NHParent, have you heard or seen anything different than what is on DS’s page? Do you have any other tabs that might indicate a scholarship. I just found out that even if he does get a Dean’s scholarship, he would still be excluded from the Honor’s dorm, Birnkrant, so what are you thinking of picking for housing? Do you see any special dorms for engineering students, Spaceduck? No other perks for the Dean’s except the ability to get in line for housing earlier that I can find. Nothing in DS’s packet for TO or the Honors Science programs either and I think you had to get an invite for those as well. Did you get anything regarding those programs?

Thanks in advance for your reply!

fidoprincess, did your son check the dates for RSVP for ExploreUSC? I only ask because the dates for Explore usually indicate interview sessions for the higher scholarships. Can you see which dates are listed? Of course, there are general Explore (same name) dates for all admitted students later in April. Just checking in case…

Thanks madbean, yes, the dates to RSVP for Explore on his usc connect page start April 8th and are just the one day programs for admitted students. I think the dates for those invited to interview are much earlier, in March? so I guess he is absolutely not getting invited.

@fidoprincess - my son’s page is exactly same as your status (RSVP tab, but no mention of scholarship), all like you said. The explore dates also are same as you mentioned.

I am wondering since he is an NMSF and likely NMF offered admission and no scholarship as he was not considered for the top two anyway? Or some other weird practice/logic like that?:)

he was not considered for the top two anyway? Or some other weird practice/logic like that?

The top Full Tuition+ Scholarships are offered to the most outstanding students who have the stats to get into the tippy-top colleges and also have qualities that USC really wants, enough so that they are offer them a very big carrot in order to snag them away from a higher rated college. As with college admissions at most top colleges these days, the admission process is holistic, and trying to figure out why one student was admitted or passed over, is much like trying to peer into a black box. If they decide to go to USC, their hi stats help make USC’s Student Profile look even better .Its a quest for ratings, as well as a for a student body that top tier profs will want to teach to .

Parent NH
He was offered admission and IF he is a NMF he automatically WILL receive the 1/2 tuition scholarship IF he accepts the offer of acceptance from USC AND designates USC as his top choice by the mid May deadline.
Those lucky enough to be offered an early acceptance wont find out about the NMF scholarship until much later, when USC receives the official NMF list from NMSF.

Thanks ParentNH, As menloparkmom says your child will get 1/2 tuition scholarship for NM as well as an additional $1000 for NM. He won’t require any interview, it’s automatic as long as he lists USC as his first choice by a certain date(-don’t know when.) I also read that sometimes the student finds additional money tacked on up to $2500. He is also allowed to live in the honors dorm.

The early acceptance without any scholarship was just weird and my son isn’t NM. He really likes USC though so we’ll see what happens. Of course, he just got the invite to apply for UCLA regents and said he likes that school too-lol. I think he is just going to pick whatever school gives him the most money and no loans. Yes, he is smart!

Thanks menloparkmom and fidoprinces. Yes I am aware of that automatic half tuition +1K once NMF is official. But had to wait:). Also DS got today that he was nominated as “US Presidential Scholars Program”. Not sure what it means yet, and how he got nominated.

@fidoprinces - My DS’s dilemma is how to evaluate full tuition at northeastern and 20K schilarship at UIUC Vs USC (at potential half tuition).

Thanks for your advice…

“The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. Each year, up to 141 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.”

this is a great honor to be nominated and a HUGE HONOR if he is one of the 141 chosen!
