Accepted with(out?) Scholarship... ?

I received my acceptance letter from USC today. Because it came so early, I assumed that I would be up for either a Trustee or Presidential Scholarship.

I have read a LOT of posts on this forum since opening my letter this afternoon. Many students accepted this year have written that they received their acceptances WITH notification of their nominations for the Presidential/Trustee Scholarships.

While this would lead me to conclude that I am not being considered for these highly selective merit awards, I have read other posts here from previous years with people writing that they had received acceptance letters in late January, but then received a notification of their Presidential/Trustee Scholarship a week later via mail.

My question is this: has USC changed its previous practices of sending out two mailings to accepted students? Or is there still hope for those of us who received acceptances with no such scholarship mentioned?

Logically, I suppose only time will be able to answer such a question, but if anyone has any sort of inside information, it would be greatly appreciated. :)

I know that in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 cycles, NO scholarship letters arrived with the early admissions, and the only applicants admitted without scholarships in the first wave were the BAC/MD candidates (a program that no longer exists). The Trustee/Presidential scholarship letters arrived 3 days to a week after the acceptance package. In Mid-February, another wave of acceptance packages would arrive, and many of those admits received the Dean’s scholarship in a letter following by about a week.

Last year, the 2011 cycle, was different. Trustee and Presidential letters arrived WITH the acceptance packages, and several posters reported receiving no mention of a scholarship with their package. We were unsure of what was going on until later in February when the Dean’s letters arrived. By then the furor had died down, but of those posting, no one who had been admitted early reported NOT getting a Dean’s.

I did not see ANY posts from applicants who did not receive a Trustee or Presidential letter with their package report that such a letter arrived separately later.

On the other hand, they changed the pattern last year, so it is entirely possible they will change it this year.

Best of luck!

Abirdy, I also revieved package without nominations for scholarship. I’ve done some reading on the forum and tend to conclude that if you log into USConnect account, try to rsvp Explore USC, and if it only gives you available dates in April (which is what I got), you are not getting an interview for trustee or presidential scholarship.

However, if you are a NMF, you will get automatic NMF presidential scholarship, half tuition, regardless your scholarship status on acceptance letter.

Congrats ivyfan and abirdy! Perhaps someone should add these early acceptance/likely Deans to the “roll call” thread that was just started. It’s still a major honor and great thrill to get an early acceptance. So many would love to be in your shoes.

^^ I think ivyfan2 has got it right.

Yes! Add your names to the early admit list!

ivyfan, the April date is what was given on my son’s USConnect account when he logged in tonight.

Fortunately, he’s a NMF.

alamemom, should all acceptees without pres/trustee invites expect the Dean’s scholarship like last year?

I think they should HOPE that it turns out like last year - but until the notification is in your hand don’t make big announcements. Also bear in mind that there are many other scholarships in addition to the Dean’s that will be awarded, and in some cases the others can be “stacked” and add up to as much or more than the Dean’s.

The http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1281871-2012-trustee-presidential-early-admissions-notice-check.html</a> thread would be a great way to track what happens with the early admits that haven’t received scholarship notification yet. In ALL cases, be aware that USC has admitted you early because you are among the students USC would MOST like to attract - CONGRATULATIONS!

Does an NMF Presidential Scholarship stack with any of the other scholarships?

The NMSF Presidential comes with an automatic extra $1,000/year scholarship. It cannot be combined with Trustee, Presidential (non-NMSF), Dean’s, Mork or Stamps. It can be combined with a USC University scholarship, but that scholarship cannot exceed $2,500/year. It can be combined with outside scholarships.

IMPORTANT! ALL USC merit scholarships CAN be combined with need-based financial aid up to the amount of your USC-calculated need.

I have a couple of questions.

What mail service is USC using to deliver these letters?

If a student gets an admission with no scholarship interview letter, can the student autmomatically assume an NMF scholarship if the student is a finalist?

texaspg, I got the package by usps priority mail. I am curious about the second question as well. alamemom, is there any point to go to a presidential interview if the student is a NMF?

ivyfan - An addendum to your question - Do expected NMFs even get the invitation for presidential interview?

@ivyfan2: If I’m correct, there is still a chance to be bumped up to a Trustee if the student attends the interview.

@mysticczZ, thanks, that makes sense.
@texaspg, I believe so. I saw someone mentioned earlier being NMF and offered presidential interview.

To get the NMSF Presidential, the student must

 • Be accepted to USC
 • Name USC as their first-choice school by the NM deadline (late April)
 • No interview is required for the NMSF Presidential

YES! Please consult this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1097370-trustee-presidential-scholarship-interview-results-2011-a-6.html</a> . Note the summary in post #77. 22% of our small sample who were invited to interview for the Presidential and attended the interview were “bumped up” and received the full-tuition Trustee Scholarship.

In addition, the Explore sessions are a LOT of fun - after the admissions season of you trying to please all the schools, it is a real pleasure to have USC trying to please you and entice you to attend  . I recommend you attend!

Some of those invited to interview for Trustee and Presidential (non-NMSF) scholarships are NMSF, but you will not receive an invitation to interview for the NMSF Presidential Scholarship - no interview is required for that scholarship - if you are accepted and name USC as your first-choice school by the deadline, you are awarded the scholarship.

So, some NMSF will be invited to interview for the Trustee or (non-NMSF) Presidential, and some will not.

thank you alamemom, you are very helpful. :D

:)

And now I am going out to dinner! Try to relax tomorrow (no mail!!!) and enjoy a day off from admission worries.

I understand most invitees are NMF caliber students. Presidential scholars who are interviewed and NMFs who are not interviewed get the same money (assuming NMFs did the nomination etc correctly).

It sounds like the only reason (other than having fun mentioned above at parents’ expense!) to show up for a presidential interview if one is an NMF is to hope to be bumped up to a trustee?
