I know 10 guys have been accepted only heard of a few girls but not sure on that.

It just seems odd that some of us haven’t heard anything and our accounts are still active.

Just wondering if there are any parents on here of current students had a few questions

My son is home for spring break (freshman MT major) so I could ask him a question or two for you. He may not know the answers though, he isn’t administratively oriented.

I can try and help too if you have questions.
My son is also a freshman MT at Ithaca.

I have a question. If kids fly into the Ithaca airport, what’s the best way to get to campus?

AsstToTheMT, I couldn’t answer that one so I asked another mom. She replied (and gave me permission to quote here):

“The best way to get to campus from the airport is to ask a friend to pick you up or ask your Big. There are taxis as well. I think you should note that the bus system is not great. I also think it is important to be as honest as possible about the good and the not so good of living in a very isolated campus.”

Thank you! We have visited Ithaca. It’s absolutely beautiful, and I can imagine the walk to town and back might be nice certain times of the year, but pretty horrible through the winter. Good to know about taxi potential and other students willing to help out.

What is the schedule for an MT? Do you take the gen eds right away as a freshman or in later years? Also, I think I read somewhere that MTs take 17-21 gen ed credits total. Is that typically 4 credits per gen ed course?

My daughter has her car up there this semester, but didn’t last semester. She relied on the bus, which stops on campus and takes the kids down the hill into the town. She finds the bus fine, but has not tried to use it for the airport (the airport, I think, only flies to 3 cities: Detroit, NJ, and somewhere in Pennsylvania? So, it’s not convenient for most of the kids). Some kids do walk to town, but it is easy to get rides. Ithaca is a great college town, and having two professional theaters (Hangar and Kitchen) right there is fabulous. I think that kids who are used to suburban or rural living will not have a problem with Ithaca at all…kids who grew up in a very urban environment may have some trouble getting used to the fact that you have to drive or take a bus to the CVS.

There are VERY few gen eds at Ithaca. They take one English seminar the first semester of freshman year. They just instituted a new requirement (our freshman kids are the first to fall victim to this) where they have to take a total of 12 credits over the four years within some kind of theme. Here is the web page for it. Integrative Core Curriculum | Ithaca College; The MT kids have to either take classes within the theme “Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation” OR “Mind, Body and Spirit.” It’s going to be hard for the MT kids to fit these in, but the faculty are working with the college to make it happen (and, I suspect it may not last…but I could be wrong). The MT kids take a LOT of classes. I think this semester it is 11 classes…? Many of them are only one credit, but it is a lot. Basically, the MT BFA is a double major in theater and voice, with a minor in dance. So it is impossible for them to double major or even minor in something else. It is very demanding, but my daughter absolutely ADORES the training.

Hope this helps…?

Hi! My D is a Freshman at Ithaca and she loves it! (We are from the suburbs of Seattle so that is her reference point). Several months ago the Princeton Review rated Ithaca as the number one college town in America and for good reason. It’s not so small that there is absolutely nothing to do but yet big enough that they can have some small adventures on the weekends and not have to spend hours or lots of money doing it. The area is beautiful, and the people seem very friendly. She does not have a car there and has had no problem getting rides with her Big to the store or airport when she needs to, and she has also taken a taxi to or from the airport a couple of times. I’m not sure about the gen eds question, but I do know she is very busy as is the case of most BFA programs I would think. Congrats to all those with acceptances and feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I don’t know all the answers but I can try to find out the answer for you! Best of luck in making the big decision!!!

Thank you!!

very excited made our reservations for April 12 to go back to meet faculty, current students and recently accepted students.

The best way to get around Ithaca is to get rides from those who have cars on campus. Many of the local kids have cars because it is hard to get around by bus. For example, the bus from campus to the Wegmans (fabulous grocery store!) takes about 45 minutes due to a circuitous route. My D has been known to walk there instead of taking the bus because she finds it takes about the same or less time. But hard to do with bags of groceries - and not a good option in the winter. Like Mamarmarino, we are from the Seattle area and our D has often chosen to take the bus down to NYC (5 hours) and stay overnight before flying out of Newark to get home. That way she can get a direct flight and get her NYC “fix” at the same time!

Sounds like she likes it. We have a Wegmans local one of our favorite stores as they have a ton of gluten free options. We are very excited to go back for a second look with no auditions happening so will see things totally differently now.

Thanks @prntosome – that’s really helpful info. D could fly and connect through Detroit, but I never thought about the bus to NYC option and a direct flight home from there (which would work for us in AZ too). Figuring time spent at the airports and with the connection, it’s probably quite similar when you add it all up.

AsstToTheMT was your D skyping last night with the group? My s mentioned someone from AZ was on there. I think it is awesome they are touching base already. How different from when I went to school!

Hey, @NewYorkSon and @AsstToTheMT, I think all our kids were skyping together last night! Networking starts even before final decisions – good practice for after they’re out of college! Hoping we all get to meet in the very near future.

i know my S has ruled out two for sure. waiting on one more ee should have by Monday i am told so next week may be final decision for us. very excited. i think alot are really nervous to decide that they will pick the wrong one. we are going to guide him but i feel he will know what will be best for him.

Yes indeed, @maMTma!
