hey everyone. i hopefully plan to transfer to cal next year for philosophy. so to all you people that got accepted for phil(congrats!), i was wondering what your overall and major gpa was? ...and how many phil classes you took. any info would be great. thanks!

I was recently accepted into the College of Letters and Science (Philosophy) at UC Berkeley with a 3.60 (ccc) gpa and 1 Philosophy class (ethics) with my IGETC complete from a local JC.

thanks. anyone else?!?

Accepted for the Spring semester, my transfer gpa was overall in between 3.5-3.6.
When I applied, I was taking my first philosophy class(in the fall). I took Ethics in the winter, and am currently taking 3 now(during the spring).

my friend got into Cal with a 3.4 gpa (maybe less). he took every phil class offered at our CC.

I got a 3.81, which is probably higher than it needed to be for acceptance.

thanks for the info. how was phil classes did you take?

bummmmmmmmmmp

I know this was from a long time ago, but I thought…why not rekindle the old flame? This thread is exactly what I’m looking for. Anyways, for any phil majors that were accepted to Cal, or that are applying, post your stats.

same here! and question- I’ve taken 4 intro phil classes so far, none of them were prereqs. Since I kind of slacked off at first, and then encountered a legitimate hardship, I got Bs in the first 3 phil classes I took (an A last semester). Since I plan to take the 3 prereqs this year, I’ll have 7 phil classes, but my major GPA will still be fairly low. Will this hurt me? Or will the 7 major prep classes help me?

anyway, could you guys include major prep, major GPA, prereqs type info too? thanks

theres already threads for philosophy majors to post their stuff

@ CalBearGuy: Yeah there are, but none that ask for old admitees to post their stats and maybe digress about what they think got them in to their desired schools.

@ CantabilenApathy: I think that having 7 phil classes under your belt will definitely show a legitimate interest! I actually think that it will help you more than it will hurt you. Assuming you get 3 more A’s, you should end with 4 A’s and 3 B’s and if you can explain how those B’s were due to hardships, then I think 7 classes will still look great.

To put it into perspective, I’ve only taken 2 phil classes lol. Neither of them are a prerequisite, however, there aren’t any phil classes that articulate to Cal from my CC.

My major GPA is 4.0, no prereqs articulate, 2 phil classes (2 A’s), IGETC done, 3.57 UC GPA, 3.6 overall.

I’ve got a 3.2 GPA, but finished three pre-reqs, and have taken a total of seven philosophy courses (5 As and 2 Bs).

Hey! A friend of mine at a jc is interested in Cal for philosophy. I’m in hs so I don’t know much about transferring, but I know he didn’t do a TAG program. He has about a 3.5 and has taken two phil classes. He also works full time. Does he have a chance you think?

could we somehow duplicate this thread to the ucb forum? idk how many transfers are still patrolling teh uc transfer forum.

Unless you provide a link or repost the question, it’s stuck on this page.

@easd- sure he has a chance. 3.5 is the average phil GPA at UCB, or at least it’s close. And UCB doesn’t do TAG, so that doesn’t matter. Working full time will help a lot. As for the prereqs, they’re somewhat lenient about them since most jcs don’t offer them at all. So I wouldn’t say he’s guaranteed in, but a solid shot.

Cantabilen, are you sure that the average GPA for phil at UCB is 3.5? On UC statfinder (from 2008 I believe…which is the latest year it lists) it says that the average admitted GPA is 3.67. Then again, that would contradict the other statistic which is this: According to statfinder, UCB admitted 51% (133/261) of phil majors in 2008. The average GPA applied was 3.41. Assuming that roughly half fall above and half fall below this mark, it wouldn’t make sense for the average GPA admitted (3.67) to be so much higher than the average applied GPA (3.41). What do you think is the truth on these matters lol?

I have no idea. I’ve seen so many stats, including L&S middle 50% GPA being 3.72-3.79 (***??!!!) and UCLA’s philosophy average being 3.49. Everyone is pretty set on the last one, and I’m pretty sure UCB’s is similar.

And statfinder is weird. I think I got 67% when I did that, but I also think I narrowed the search to just CCC transfers. so there are stats all around, and none of them make sense.

However, the general consensus is that for non impacted majors, a 3.5 is solid.
