Hello! I was wondering if there's any philosophy majors waiting nervously! :D I applied to UCSD and UCI as a political science major (accepted at both), but applied to UCLA and Berkeley as a philosophy major. I can't wait to hear from UCLA since it is my first choice.. By the way, my cumulative gpa is 3.63 (however, did not really do well in UCLA's pre-reqs), do you think I have chances of getting into UCLA?

i know someone who got into UCLA for phil. without at least 2 of the three major prereqs done (logic, and skepticism/phil. of mind) and he got in. Have no clue what his GPA was, but he certainly knew his stuff. I think you have a good shot. you’re a bit above the average GPA for admitted students, so i think you’ll be fine.

3.83 UC GPA
Only 1 out of 4 pre-reqs done because my school doesn’t offer the other three that articulate!
No Tag
ECs is mainly work and hardship related stuff… work 50/60 hour weeks with 18-20 unit semesters the last three semesters.

Heres hoping for UCLA!

I saw someone in the 2010 official ucla transfer thread that got in with a 3.23 with all of his pre-reqs in with no tag.

I also someone with a 3.8(i think) with 2 out 4 pre-reqs done get in.

I’m not a philosophy major but UC Berkeley’s arts & humanities division of L&S had an acceptance rate of 40% for fall 2010, a reasonably high acceptance percentage. :)

I am a philosophy major waiting!
My OVERALL UC GPA is 3.82
Will be done with all 4 major pre-reqs! (I’ve completed 3 so far, and I am currently taking the 4th pre-req)
IGETC complete (will be after spring 2011)
Plenty of EC’s (Volunteer Basketball Coach for my local park/rec. center, American Cancer Society volunteer, musician, etc.)
Currently employed
Already accepted to UCSD and UCI.
I did NOT do TAP however. Hopefully this wont affect me much because my UC GPA (3.82) is way above the average for Phil Majors who were accepted last year (3.54).
But yeah, I am anxiously waiting like all you other fellow philosophy majors. any one wanna chance me for UCLA please? haha…

I heard decisions come out on or around April 20th. Almost there!

I’m waiting, but I’ve already been accepted to UCSB which has the Ethics and Public Policy concentration that I’d like to do. If I get into Berkeley or UCLA it’ll make for a pretty tough decision, however.

Is it better to get all your pre-reqs done? I feel like the Philo classes at my College are quite difficult compared to other CCs…So I was wondering if I should pad up my GPA with easier classes with only 1/2 of the pre-reqs or should I just take all the pre-reqs?

It sucks, I could have gotten TAP but for some reason the Berkeley Rep said they didn’t have any during my first semester. I took her word and later I found out there was TAP but it was pretty much too late to register. Good luck to all in the transfer process.

haha i didnt do TAP either, but it should be fine. TAP i feel is more to help out those applying to highly impacted majors. philosophy is not impacted at all. and if ur GPA is above the average of those who got accepted as phil majors last year (3.54), youre chances will be good. You have a 3.63, so you should be fine. I have a 3.82 UC GPA so im feeling pretty confident even without TAP. but you never know, we shall see in about 2 weeks! and also did you finish all the pre-reqs? I did. Thats a big factor also.

i am TAP certified. yes i dont think it will be as useful as with impacted majors, but i still wanted to be in the honors program just b/c the classes were more fun etc.

I have IGETC done and philo pre-reqs done also.

what do you guys want to concentrate in? history of philo, ethics/ value theory, logic, etc?

well, like i said, i think TAP is more to help out those who are applying to highly impacted majors (like biz-econ, english, econ, poli sci, communications, etc…). If youre applying to a non impacted major like philosophy, as long as you have all the pre-reqs done and ur overall UC GPA is well above average for people in your major, your chances should be good.
