Accepted! Fall 2012

jesse congrats! What were your stats? And how long did it take them to say your transcript was received? Because it’s been two weeks for me and they still haven’t said they got it, even though they were closed for thanksgiving.

I got accepted last week! 1610 SAT score, and 2.80 GPA coming from a college prep high school in NJ

I was accepted a few weeks ago! 1720 SAT, 25 ACT, 3.1 gpa.

I was also accepted a few weeks ago! Florida Resident, 1660 SAT, 24 ACT, 3.3 Unweighted GPA, 3.5 Weighted GPA, 2 Varsity Sports, and a couple of clubs (nothing prestigious like NHS, Key Club, Etc.).

Florida Atlantic University is definitely not my top school choice, but it certainly is nice not having to worry about being accepted to a school anymore  FAU is pretty much acting as my backup school. If I am not admitted into any other schools that I’ve applied to, I’ll happily attend FAU and try to make the best of it.

JuicyyyJ,

May I ask… why is FAU “definitely not [your] top school choice” and why do you think you’d have to “try and make the best of it?”

After looking back at my post, that probably was not the best choice of words. I’ve been lurking CC for a couple of months now and know that you’re the “Go-To Guy” for FAU. With that being said, I know you think highly of FAU and know many different things about the university, but it honestly does not meet the standards that other Florida schools do.

What do I mean by these “standards” though? Well one things for sure, the academic education at FSU, UCF, and USF are definitely better than FAU’s. FAU’s academic system is surely growing, considering the fact that the schools middle 50% of accepted students has sky rocketed over the past couple of years. I recall that a couple of years back, FAU was the “everyone gets in” school. Students with <3.0 GPA’s could easily gain acceptance. Things have certainly changed now. However, it still has much room to grow to meet the level of other Florida Universities.

Some other “standards” the school simply doesn’t meet, are it’s entire environment and experience. As you know, Florida Atlantic University is located in the small, rich city of Boca Raton. My best friend goes to FAU and he tells me all the time how Boca is such an expensive town. Thats no plus for a struggling college student. Another thing I don’t like about FAU is the fact that it is a small commuter campus and is in no way located in a college town. I have had several students tell me that when class is not in session, the entire campus just seems dead. I’ve been told that come Friday, Saturday, and Sunday… the campus can be compared to a wasteland. Why is that? Because all of the students are back home. On top of the campus not having life, neither do the students. This may seem like a bizarre reason that I’d prefer not to attend FAU, but honestly… wheres the damn school spirit? Its a shame that a school that just recently built a 33,000 seat stadium has terrible spirit. If I’m going to attend a university, I want to be proud of my team and be surrounded by peers that have the exact same attitude.

So far, my top choices are Florida State University and the University of Central Florida. I live in Tampa (fairly close to USF) and have debated going to USF to save myself the extreme costs for room and board (me and my family are not financially well, but thats a completely different story). I’ve decided that I don’t want to go there though, because its so close. I live in a household of 6 people. I know that I’m going to be struck by the burden of student loan debt when I graduate from a University, so I might as well enjoy it with the full college experience of living alone and away at a well developed school. That leaves FSU and UCF on my list. About 4 hours ago I found out I was accepted to the Summer 2012 term at UCF. Along with that, I’ve been accepted to FAU’s Fall 2012 term and deferred from FSU (We’ll see what happens on March, 14th).

I’m still a little unsure what I’m going to do. There are many great things both UCF and FAU offer. So far though, UCF seems like a better choice for me. If I wasn’t granted admission to UCF today, I would still happily attend FAU. I guess my words of “try to make the best of it” were simply because FAU is not my top choice. I’ve never once said to myself, “I want to go to FAU. I want to be an Owl!” However, if it was my only choice, I would “make the best of it” and enjoy myself. Florida Atlantic University certainly has its strong points, however it is a young school and still has a lot to grow to be compared to schools like Florida State and Central Florida.

Aliclaire, are you in state or out of state? Because my stats are just above yours, but I was wondering if that’s a factor for you, and how long it took to hear back when they had your file marked as complete. Just wondering.

Accepted with 3.1 GPA, 25 on ACT, 1200 SAT (Math and Critical Reading), 1780 (3 Sections)

Just got accepted with a 3.3/4.0 and SAT 1440 from NC

Denied -
3.1 GPA
SAT
600- reading
600- math
510- writing
1710

To juicy:

While I do believe the academic education at FSU is a little “better” because they have more state resources and more accomplished professors who may expect more from their students, I very much doubt that “UCF, and USF are definitely better than FAU’s” since we’re all in a similar academic situation. I do know that USF has a very good medical school, however, and UCF has good film and engineering programs.

You can’t count the overall GPA/SAT score of FTIC freshman as indicative of rising quality in academics because whether you’re admitted with a 3.0 in 2001 or a 3.9 in 2005, your Biochemistry class is still going to be covering the same material and giving you roughly the same tests as they always have been. It’s really up to each professor how easy or difficult they want to make the tests, and thus, how much you get out of it.

And that’s kind of the point.

Outside of the Top 10 or 20 schools, you really have to start thinking about a school in term of the program you’re pursuing rather than the overall reputation. Some schools are just stronger than others in certain areas because they devote more resources to them. For instance, FAU is strong in ocean engineering because we have an entire dedicated SeaTech branch campus for that (not to mention that we founded the discipline). On the other hand, UCF’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program is something like 5 times the size of the same program at FAU and they’ve got their own building.

As for atmosphere, your perception is a bit off but I’d rather you end up somewhere where you’d be happy. If living in an older college town is what you want, go for it. FAU’s making strides in that department but it’s not on the level of Gainesville or Tallahassee (Orlando isn’t a college town). Boca Raton matured differently but the City Council is very pro-FAU and commissioned a study about the feasibility of converting 20th Street next to FAU into a “University Avenue” with dedicated shops, restaurants and nightlife for FAU students… within walking distance of the campus.

Anyway, good luck on your decision. I’m sure you’ve made it by now.

I have an interview this week for grad school, what are the questions they ask? I am so nervous!!

How’d it go, gradgirl1?

Accepted as a transfer from PBSC with an AA. Going for a BA in Anthropology. Even though I live in Wellington I am thinking about living in a dorm on campus to avoid the dreaded turnpike or 95 daily drive to Boca. Tips?

Hi Moschiandoe,

Welcome to Owl Country!

You’d qualify as an upperclassman and thus be eligible to live in the University Village Apartments, which I’d recommend. Beyond that, the Indian River Towers would be your second best bet.

The Innovation Village Apartment complex is the newest dorm, and opened Fall 2011. Although it’s nice but it’s also really expensive to most people (~$4500-5000/semester).

If you’re not opposed to living off campus, you can check out [Florida Atlantic University | Off Campus Housing Search](http://www.fauoffcampus.com) to find something nearby campus that might be cheaper and give you more flexibility in your living situation.

Good luck!

Daughter started the admission process in 10/11 for 8/12. She is transferring from a FL State College as an honor student with above a 4.0. Should have been a simple process, however, FAU kept saying they needed more to process. Since Oct. she had her transcript sent electronically 10 times, reg. mail twice, and we visited the campus twice from 4 hours away. Finally after many recent phone calls, emails, and another campus visit the glitch was worked out last week and they officially accepted her. Unfortunately this caused her to miss the opportunity for the transfer and honor scholarships. She now has the last orientation date in Aug. and most of the classes she needs say closed online. We’ll have to see what happens at orientation, but, she might be better off avoiding FAU and entering UF in the spring. Didn’t have any problems like this when my older daughter transferred from the same FL State College to another major university a few years ago.

Sorry to hear about your troubles, Floridamomof2! Hope everything works out and your daughter gets a fair shot here.

3.48 gpa, 1480 sat (on all three sections, will retake to raise).

What are my chances of getting accepted to fau? & when should i apply if i want to go for the fall 2012 term?

The numbers are still being crunched but here’s what I know now:

The fall 2012 freshman profile for the mid- 50% was…

High School GPA: 3.35 - 3.95
ACT composite: 23 - 27
SAT total: 1560 - 1770
Acceptance rate in the 30%'s

I have a feeling like the end numbers will be close to 3.5-3.6/25/1650. So you should have a good shot because your GPA is right around the middle there.

When should you apply? I assume you meant the Fall 2013 term because the Fall 2012 term just started. For Fall 2013, might as well do it now.
