Accepted Jan 2012 Semester?

Hey,

So I got my BU decision today and saw that I was accepted! However, on my second read through I realized that it said, “You have been admitted to the College of Arts & Sciences for the January 2012 semester.”

There was virtually no recognition or explanation as to why I was accepted for the Spring semester even though I’m sure I applied to Fall 2011. I know lots of schools admit that way, but I find it odd that they didn’t make more of a distinguished point.

Anyone else admitted January 2012?

Did you call to find out more about it?

hey the same thing happened to me and I called and they said they had a record amount of people who applied. I am really upset about it too… I don’t know what I am going to do.

Yeah, I called too and they told me the same thing.

Sucks cause they gave me practically nothing for financial aid… $11,900 for the semester when my EFC is 0.

Guess I’m not going to BU either. :/

Yeah I’m really ****ed about it. BU was one of my top choices and I wonder if there’s anything we can do about this. =/

I emailed them to ask what we’re supposed to do until January. Honestly, I’m pretty ****ed that I have to wait until January, but it beats my other options.

Same thing happened to me.
Where are you all seeing your financial aid awards? When I click my “financial assistance” tab, it just tells me that a decision is pending.

Your financial aid award should be under decision, but don’t worry I didn’t get mine either -.-

Joe, this is quite the infuriating process with this school, isn’t it?

I’m going to call tomorrow and state that BU is my top choice school but going in the Fall is essentially mandatory. Maybe a little force will be enough to get a response?

This was incredibly disappointing to me.

Lol, Sam we think alike, I am planning on doing the same thing. I was going to do it today but their office closed at 5 -.-

Heh, we should conference call and go all class action on their offices! :)))

lololol sounds like a plan to me =P. Btw sam, was BU your first choice?

I called today for my daughter today and they stated “Congratulations” but there is no way to get in for the fall semester. The person said that she could even defer for next year. In general, not a very good option. We have not received any FA news yet but from these posts, I am not expecting very good news either.
Good luck to you all!

For all who were accepted to the January 2012 semester start, are any of you guys able to attend the Spring Open House? I’ve been trying to RSVP on ApplicantLink, but I’m only allowed to RSVP for the off-campus one in my city. It’s sort of weird considering BU mailed me my acceptance papers today and told me to log in to ApplicantLink to RSVP for the open house in April.

My son was accepted to BU for the spring semester as well, with next to none financial aid?? I’m confused since he was accepted to both Northeastern and American with almost $40,000.00 in scholarships and financial aid! They are equally good schools and even harder to get into according to stats on College Board. He had a GPA 3.63, SAT 2130 and AP tests all with 5…plus solid sports performance and extra stuff. Was it really that hard for BU to offer a bit more incentive to the prospective students they put off until the spring? I also think that they should have the courtesy to send more information on what this really entail. The financial info did not show up on the site right away and when it finally did it was “oh we are sorry but we will not be able to offer you any grants or scholarships”?? No invitation to open house for admitted students etc. They are not sending a very professional message , rather very arrogant. Thanks to Northeastern and American who have websites that works and professional friendly people when you call. I think BU may end up regretting the way this has been handled this year…or is this how they always do it? I’m disappointed not because my son didn’t get in to the fall semester but the lack of professional conduct by BU. All you guy’s and girls out there Forget about BU!.. Go to one of the other colleges that treat you with respect!

I’m as willing as the next guy to criticize BU, but it’s really pathetic to go on an online rant about a school that your kid couldn’t get a favorable admissions decision at.

@mammaa, I am sorry you are disappointed that your child didn’t receive the aid he wanted and that you were not happy with your communication with BU. But to be fair, this is just one student and one parent’s experience. How can you indict the whole of Boston University based on this one incident. My child and I have had a completely opposite experience with BU. I have had many telephone conversations with the staff in various departments at BU and have found them to be very friendly and helpful. No, I did not always get the answer that I wanted, but that is just the way it is. But the staff was always respectful and patient with their explanations. Boston University is a private school and as such can disperse their merit money however they see fit. If your child has other great options, as you say, send him to one of those schools and move on with your life. Ranting about BU and telling other kids that they should not go to BU isn’t going to help your son.

Yes, it isn’t that BU doesn’t “respect” you or your son, it’s that they have thousands upon thousands of applicants for a limited number of spots. If your son did very well in scholarships/acceptances at other comparable schools to BU, perhaps that factored in to their admission calculation. BU might have had more applicants with similar stats to your son’s, been unable to offer him immediate admission and substantial aid. This is the reality of college admissions. I also had an outstanding 4 years at BU, including my admissions communication with them.

Good news! Today I went to the Welcome Reception in San Francisco and was able to talk to Kelly Walter, who is the Assistant Vice President and Executive Director of Admsisions (if you check the website, she’s the woman in the video about how to write an essay that stands out). She said that for those who are offered admission in the Spring Semester, THERE IS STILL HOPE! When May 1 rolls around and everyone sends in their deposits, the Admissions Office will get a more exact number of students enrolling. If they need more students, they will go to the Spring Semester kids FIRST and offer them admission into Fall BEFORE going to the kids who were waitlisted. She told me that there were only about 50 kids offered Spring.

Hope that helps!

@jeezcake: I truly hope that you’re right about this because I’ve been freaking out about the whole Spring admittance thing! Aah!

Is there any way of increasing your chances of getting a spot in the Fall or is it all random?
