My D was just accepted at UConn. It is a leading candidate, but we are OOS, so she may not be able to visit until March or April, and she is considering a few other schools.

I read somewhere that housing is assigned randomly and that the date you accept the offer (as long as by May 1) does not affect housing -- is that correct? She'd rather not accept the offer just to get into the housing queue, but I want to make sure she does not get left out in the cold.

Also, any advice on planning a visit (she may fly out by herself), such as where to stay, and what to try to arrange. She generally likes just a walking tour and overview, as opposed to 1:1 mtgs etc., so default would just be their standard daily tour.

As long as you pay the deposit by the deadline, yes, housing is random (unless you are an honors student, or you submit the deposit after the deadline).

Seems like the standard tour would be good for her!

Thanks much! – that is a relief, and I appreciate that approach…many schools require early decisions to get in the housing/orientation queue which seems unfair and only complicates things for everyone during this stressful time.

The Husky for a day program is great. They get to hang with a student for a while and see what the campus is really like. Not just the buildings. My daughter was with a uconn senior and one other visitng incoming freshman. Uconn is my D’s second choice but this helped her see she would be happy if she ends up there. And you will know she’s in good hands for most of the day. There is also a hotel right on campus that would be really convenient for a student there by herself.

Thank you, oosmom! Very helpful information…I think we will wait a few weeks to see where things fall with the other schools she is waiting to hear from, and will go from there.
