Accepted, Now What?

So this is my first one going to College. We’ve applied to several schools and just received her first acceptance but still have several schools to hear back from. In the acceptance letter there are instructions on next steps. How to apply for scholarships, setting up an account, etc. It lists the deadlines for several activities.

Obviously, we don’t know if this is where she will end up going as we still have 4 more schools to hear from. One we think we will hear from as early as next week. The others I think traditionally wait until Nov at the earliest to notify.

My question, what is the protocol for dealing with the next steps. Let’s say she gets the acceptance from the next school so she has two yeses and between the two there is a clear favorite. Do you still go a head and apply for the scholarships and do all the set up work for both. I’m assuming we should so we can see what type of offers she get’s to compare but not having been through this before, I wasn’t sure how you handle multiple acceptances. When I went to school I only applied to one school, got in and went there so I didn’t have to deal with multiples myself.

For those of you that already have one in college, what did you all do when you had multiple acceptance letters?

See it as suitors wooing your kid. No need to accept right away. Apply for the scholarships and see what happens. Does that re-order the preference list? Maybe, maybe not.

I remember that one school tried to get me to commit within two weeks of my acceptance. I was admitted in November, they were the second school to admit me. Of course, I was able to get an extension until May 1st, and I ultimately turned them down. I showed much less consideration for the first school that I got into, which was my safety, purely because I was so eager to leave my home state. Which I did.

Honestly, just wait until you have all your letters in hand before you jump the gun. That’s what I did.

The only thing to consider is, if it’s a large school, the sooner a deposit it paid, the better housing options are. That said, you are not (should not be) obligated to do anything at this point. Wait for the other decisions to arrive.

Once a decision is made, you’ll pay the deposit and move forward with the selected school.

Just be sure to read the letter and materials in case there is a deadline for scholarship acceptance or housing or anything else.

And, Congratulations!

Yes, we are not committing to anything until we have all the offers in I just wasn’t sure if we should start applying for the scholarships and doing all the steps stopping just short of committing on a school she may not attend. I was just thinking about the work involved in the scholarships, essay, letters of recommendations, etc.

I think we need to at least go through some of the steps to see what offers she gets and then re-evaluate the schools to see what makes the best sense. I just know one of the schools would only be considered if she didn’t get into the other 4 so do we take the time to go through all the steps with that school when we anticipate she should get accepted to at least 3 of her 5 options.
