So, I was wondering if anyone who got in early had anything in their letter on the website about Directed Studies? I was really interested in the program, and I was wondering if they let anyone in at this point.

They wait until the RD decisions come out usually. If they really really want you and they really really think you are a good match, they may send a letter telling you that you're in, but most likely you will have to wait until mid-April. That's when most people I know got theirs.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but does anyone know whether financial aid decisions come with the initial acceptance letter, or later in the mail?

you have to apply to DS. and then you die. DS kids are v. hardcore. my best friend from back home took DS and i haven't seen him more than 3 times this semester. thursdays are owned by paper-writing. i didn't do DS, i can learn all that stuff elsewhere. i'm v. happy i didn't do DS.

You don't have to apply to DS. About half the people just get a letter saying that they are in around mid-April. The rest apply. As a contrast to edm's friend's experience, I was glad I did DS. I actually found that it made my freshman year easier. Socially I had an instant group of people I hung out with a lot, and academically I needed structure so DS was very nice for that. I have actually found post-DS life to be more difficult as now things aren't always as well coordinated and I will go for 3 weeks doing nothing to one week where I have a test or a paper in every one of my classes.

My D was accepted EA last year to Y; offered a place in DS prior to April. (No application.) She chose P instead & is doing a similar-format program there, just smaller # of students. She finds it very rewarding, so probably would have at Y, too. I agree with whoever said it's for "hard core." You have to enjoy that kind of thing; she does, but other people prefer not to be limited to one less course by doing so. (Same, in that respect, at both Y and P.)

honeyhaze,
Our FA package came out much later than the EA acceptance, but in my D's case I think it's because we delayed on providing the info to Y! So we're not a very good example. You can call them, of course.

DEFINITELY apply to DS, if you're remotely interested. Professors are a crapshoot, as are 70% of the lectures, but if you're lucky and get assigned to the right group of profs, first semester, it is DEFINITELY worth you while. And you can shop it and drop it like anything else, once you're in. Congrats on getting in to Yale :)!
