Accepted students, how many years FL you take?

As the title asks, could you posts that info if you're admited. I'm wondering how critical is the 4th year of Foreign Language for SCU admission, since my junior D really doesn't want to take AP Spanish next year, instead she'll double up math (AP calc AB & AP stat). SCU websits posts for FL, 2 yr required, 3 yr recommand, 4 yr prefered. D already taking 3 yrs, does the missing of 4th year FL hurt her chance?

I can't specifically answer your question...not enough information. One would think that ONE item on the "recommended" versus "prefered" list would not be a mar on the application. BUT without knowing your daughters courseload, grades, recommendations, ec's etc...it's hard to say whether this would have an affect or not.

DD is a junior at SCU. She took honors Spanish IV as a 10th grader (accelerated FL in high school) but didn't take it in 11th or 12th grade. BUT she had completed a high school Spanish 4 level course. And just FYI...most students at SCU HAVE to complete a foreign language requirement as part of the core course requirements. The only exception...engineering majors do not have to take the college level foreign language.

SO...I guess what I'm saying...you DD also needs to know that unless she majors in engineering...she'll have to take a foreign language sequence at SCU (I think the requirement is for at least two quarters...but it might be three).

thumper1, DD is going to major in Business. She started Spanish 1 in freshman yr and currently in Spanish 3. Her HS doesn't have regular Spanish 4, so the 4th yr has to be AP Spanish that she reeeally try to avoid. She understands she will have to fullfill foreign language requirements in college and might take on another language instead of Spanish.

This junior year, she is taking -
AP English language
AP Physics (already done Bio, Honor Chem)
PreCal
US history
Spanish 3
Orchestra

For senior yr, she's planing
AP English lit
AP Cal AB
AP stat (can't convince her for AP Spanish)
govenment/Econ
Physiology
Orchestra

I know this schedule is not as rigorous as many others here in CC. But do you think her double-up math in senior year will make up the missing of 4th year FL?

I only took 3 years of Spanish (two in middle school and spanish 3 freshman year). I was admitted into the business school. The admission officer I talked to said they want to see Physics and Calculus for the business school. Looks like you are on the right track. Good luck next year.

I have had clients get in to SCU with 3 years of a foreign language. Three years is recommended, two years required. However, here is information that might motivate your daughter: If she takes AP Spanish and gets a 4 or 5 on the AP Exam, she will not have to take a second language at SCU.
Santa Clara University - College of Arts and Sciences - Department of Modern Languages & Literatures -Language Requirement

southpawsd, never thought of business school wants to see physics, I'm so glad daughter decided to take AP physics, I recommanded regular version or AP Bio instead. The class is by far the most challenging one in her HS career, it's impossible for her to get an A, but she still enjoy the class due to many labs/experiments.

jdcpenner, thanks for the link. But daughter still wants to take AP stat instead of AP Spanish, hoping a 4 in AP exam to get by Statistics in college. The problem is that her school has many native speakers taking AP Spanish, she is afraid the curve might hurt her grade. She would rather to take it in college. I agree 4 years FL is optimal, now knowing some students can get in SCU with 3 yrs FL does help me sleep better :)

I got in early and I only took 2 years of foreign language (I was in French III as a sophomore and, like your daughter, was not keen to take an AP class in foreign language). My junior and senior year schedules were nearly identical to the ones you posted. I hope this helps you keep your mind at ease.

Idk know if this will help but to answer the title question i took 6 years. 1,2,3,4,5, AP
my school is on a 4x4 schedule so we take classes in one semester that normally take an entire year at most schools. but if she is looking to major in business i think it would be more beneficial to take the 4th year of spanish than a class like Physiology.

I only went up to Spanish 3, and I only took a total of 2 years in high school since I started in Spanish 2. I got in just fine :)

I took Spanish 1,2,3,4, and moved up to AP. Accepted! I think 3 years is fine though.

Only took 3 years of Spanish.
Accepted to the business school.

I’m in an accelerated 4th year French class right now, accepted to Engineering on scholarship and University Honors Program.

My D got in last year with three years Spanish in High school.

2 years of Spanish (to Spanish 3), 2 years of French (to French 2).

I only took two years of French in HS and still got in without a problem.
