In Cal Poly admission website, it posts 8 semester (4 yr) of Foreign Language is desired. My junior D already taking 3 yr of Spanish and she doesn’t really want to go for AP Spanish next yr, instead she’ll double up math (AP calc AB & AP stat). Does the missing of 4th year FL hurt her chance for major in business?

If you’re admitted, could you please post your MAJOR and years of FL in HS? Thanks!

S (accepted business Fall '09) had 4 years of Spanish, the first two were in middle school. He had 6 years of math (Alg 1, Geom, Alg 2, Hnrs. Pre-calc, AP Calc AB, AP Stat)

We’re facing the same FL challenge as you are w/ D now. She realllllly doesn’t want another year of Spanish and is struggling in her 3rd year now. I’d be interested to know other’s point of view on this. Would it count s the 4th year to switch to French 1?

My son admitted to Engineering in Fall '07 took only 2 years of Spanish in H.S. He had 5 years of Math (Alg 1, Geom, Alg 2, Pre-Calc, AP Calc AB).

My other son admitted to Ag Business for Fall '09 took 3 years of German in H.S. He has 6 years of Math (Alg 1, Geom. Alg 2, Pre-Calc, CC Calc 1, and CC Calc 2).

I got accepted to CS & I took 3 years of FL (went up to level 5. It’s my native language, but I’m nowhere close to being fluent.) and for math I took up to Calc BC.

SoCalGal, when I visited the campus last summer, I did ask admin if the 2nd FL would count into 4th year, they answer YES as long as is shows in transcript. But I have the impression most college prefer you stay in same language to show the in-depth. What’s your D going to major?

CalPloy also has this 10 semester English desired that I never seen for other college. These
“Desired”, “preferred” wording just drive me nuts …

Well, the admin told me to either double-up or take in CC when I asked how a student can do 5 year of English in 4 years of HS. I even went further to ask are there any students doing that, the admin was giving me that look and said, yes the most competitive would do. It seems Speech, Journalism (anything fr English Dept.) will counts, but I’m not sure.

I would less worry about the English than FL, since I never heard any other college “desire” 5th yr English.

Sorry to start this turbulence here, off-topic myself :)
Any more inputs for FL?

I was admitted into the Engineering school for next fall and I only took 3 years of Spanish and 4 years of English (including AP Brit Lit … aahhhh).

My son was admitted into the Mechanical Engineering dept. for the fall. He had four years of Spanish (including 8th). Instead of taking Spanish 5 he took two AP physics classes. He also had 6 years of math (including Algebra in 8th) ending with Cal BC. However, he only had four years of an English. I think four years of a language is optimal because you are competing against kids that do. I don’t think you are docked because you didn’t do it, you just don’t get that extra point or bump. When I spoke to admissions many months ago they told me that a computer is making the decision as to whether you get in or not. You are given x amount of points for different things. At the end if you have the amount of points they are looking for that major, you’re in - if not, you’re not. I was really surprised by that.

Admitted Business 09. I took 2 years of High school Spanish and Spanish 2 at CC. Also took English 1A at CC as I heard it’s a good thing to get it out of the way. Math: 4 years
Sister was accepted CE 06 with 5 years math, 2 years high school spanish, 1 year CC Spanish, and 4 years English

My son (admitted to Computer Science) took up through French IV - Junior Year. Senior year is taking regular Calculus, AP Stat, AP Computer Science AB.

a_mom, D’s only in 9th grade so she has no idea of major yet. (Our middle school offers two years of Spanish and kids can work ahead in math by testing into an accelerated curriculum.) We can look at her strengths and say more humanities/creative than math/science. I would push for the 4th year of Spanish, but she hates it and is struggling. S found the 4th year hard and breezed through the 3rd year, so I may let her drop and if needed she can take French 1 her senior year.

I think I might end up doing either english 101 online during my senior year, or do economics/govt during the summer and fit in Spanish 4ap during my senior year.

I think the double-up math will make up the extra point. I think the “rigor” score (rigor of college prep curriculum) is made up of the total number of A-G courses as well as extra points for Honors, AP, IB, and CC classes. The computer basically calculates a “CP Admission index” using a formula that includes a calculated number for “rigor”, the A-G course GPA (weighted for up to 8 Hon/AP/CC semesters), and the SAT/ACT score, then maybe adds a few points for EC’s and a job. Everyone within a major is ranked top to bottom by this admission index. The top applicants are admitted down to the number of openings in each department.

If this is really how it works, AP Stats should add as much to the “rigor” score as AP Spanish would have. Since your daughter will be in her senior year, the GPA won’t be affected. (She just needs to be sure and make at least a C in all A-G courses.)
