ALB - That's a shame. Have you already visited Penn? If not I would definitely try and convince your parents to let you go - I figured it was worth it in the long run because my parents wouldn't end up spending thousands of dollars to send me to a place I didn't like.

I just got back from visitng Penn. All of the VERY NICE hotels are giving special rates for "prospective" Penn students. The hotel I stayed in is normally $180.00/night. They gave it to me for $69.00/night because I was visiting Penn.
I would look into it...

Hi Thomas, what hotel gave you that great $69 rate? Also are the Penn preview days just a one day thing (not an overnight?)

I stayed at Club Quarters. It's on 17th and Chestnut. It's about ten blocks from campus - in downtown Philly. It's rated as a 3.5 - 4 star hotel. Club Quarters #: (215) 282-5000...
I talked to someone that stayed in the Sheraton @ University City for $89.00/night. You may want to check them out. Sheraton is basically on campus.
The only place that didn't give a "prospective" student discount was the Inn at Penn. Those guys were rather rude, as well.
I'm not sure about the Penn preview days. I just showed up without an appointment and walked around and went through buildings.
Plus, there was a group of parents walking around with a "tour guide". I just quietly squeezed into their group and followed them around. I talked to several of the parents and asked where their kids were, and they stated that their kids REFUSED to be seen on campus with them...lol :) (ya know...you gotta look cool - ha! ha!)
I was already accepted into Penn, so I just carried my acceptance letter and student ID# around with me on campus so that I could get through certain buildings in case someone gave me trouble. I wished I had gotten a PennCard, though. It would have been a lot easier.

Oh, by the way...Club Quarters is ONLY for students and staff/family members of Penn. It is a private membership hotel. Otherwise, you would have to pay the "regular" rate ($180.00/night). If you want to book online or call them, the membership name to LOG IN is just PENN. They won't ask you for proof. Just tell them youy are a "prospective" student" of Penn, NOT Drexel or Temple or any those other schools. They only work with Penn people.

Where did you get your student number from Thomas? Did you get that april acceptance packet they said they'd send us later from ED already?

Faux...I am not ED. Because I am 32 years old and transferring with Junior standings, Penn admits non-traditional transfers on a "rolling admissions" basis. So, I was fortunate enough not to have to wait with the "traditional" applicant pool. I received my acceptance package back in December. Georgetown does it the same way (I was just accepted last week to GT). Brown and Yale are the only schools that I applied to in which I have to wait with everyone else (Thursday!!). I'll make the decision as to where to go once I hear back from Brown/Yale.

are all the colleges (ie wharton, nursing etc) all invited to the apr 11-15 preview days? or does each have its own accepted students wknd?

In case anyone is travelling by themselves and trying to save $, there is a youth hostel in Old City which is pretty good value for money. It is quite a long way from Penn, but it's only 1/2 a block from the El, so it's easy to get to campus.
Bexter 55 - I'm pretty sure that all prefrosh come at the same time, but there are school specific panels and stuff.

Ok, so to give you guys a little heads up on Penn Previews (don't worry, you'll get plenty of info in the mail..) I work in admissions (no, I can't find out your decisions, don't ask), so we're planning all this as we speak..

Each day is the same thing, so don't bother going to more than one. And everyone is invited, regardless of school.

Each day opens with a little info session, with a bunch of the regional directors talking and such.. you'll get bags and bags of stuff (though you do get a really nice canvas bag..) they tell you you're an amazing class, blah, blah, blah.. so then tour guides come in and you get to either go on a campus tour (like the regular one you probably already went on if you visited) or a college house tour.. definitely go on the house tour if you've already seen campus, otherwise the campus tour would probably be best.

After the tour, each school has it's own specific things.. I know for engineering last year we had a lunch with different professors, etc..

later in the day there is a student panel and a parents panel (separate, and at the same time).. didn't go to those last year, but basically you just to talk to current students and your parents get to talk about paying..

That's what I can remember/know of it.. It's nice to have a second look at the campus, especially from the point of view of an accepted student vs. a student just looking..

There is also a hostel on campus. It's called the Divine Tracy Hotel. I believe their rates are around $30.00/night. They are right down the street from the bookstore.

I already visited Penn but i wanted to go to HUntsman day meet some people and have a cool time. OH well, i'll just wait till september!
