Just received my letter from SLU Med Scholars Program the other day in the mail.

Was wondering who else received letters too!

Congrats. What are your stats?

Me too!
I’m starting to here bad things about the stats, though. Are you planning on going for sure?

GPA 3.9
ACT: 33

Stellamoseley,

By bad stats do you mean that a lot of kids drop out of the program? I was worried about this too, I’ve heard though that a large number of kids are ones who decide they no longer want to go into medicine or apply to a different medical school.

I am still trying to decide though. Any advice you have would help!

30% was the number quoted by a med scholar during the interview weekend!

I have a couple of friends in the program that think it is awful. It has a low retention rate and it’s not even a guaranteed acceptance. The biggest problem for me, however, is that if you choose to apply out of SLU for medical school, you are automatically removed out of the med scholars program and your conditional acceptance is waived.

I love SLU but I am very disappointed at how they approach the med scholars program and how they mask a lot of their statistics. It would garner so much more praise if the med scholars program were changed.

Yeah, I’ve heard that about half of the students drop out before sophomore year, and then of them about 30ish apply out/fail. So then theres about 30ish students left at SLU med school. I’m sure there are loads of kids who just apply out and go to great med schools its just that we don’t know how many of them there are. I wish they would be more direct with their stats. I know for sure that their old 98% acceptance rate is out, though.

Hey, guys, Saint Louis University looks amazing, especially with the Medical Scholars Program. Do you think I can get in with a 33 ACT and 4.0 unweighted GPA? Also, how difficult is it to maintain the 3.5 GPA requirement in the courses? I don’t want to work really hard and flunk out!

Thanks!

hey i was wondering those of you who got into the slu med scholars program. when applying, did you need additional letters or forms of recommendation just for the program other than the ones you need to apply to the university from the common app?

Jessie61195,
I think you can get into the Medical Scholars Program based on your stats. Also per your stats, It should not be very hard for you to maintain 3.5 GPA at SLU. Science classes are not easy at SLU, but for students who have built good academic foundation at high school, getting good grades is not an issue.

I think that before committing, you should ask more questions about the program. My friend just told me about students in the program with 3.5 GPA that were told that it is not a guarantee, despite maintaining the GPA! In my mind, why would my kid go to such extent to be denied afterwards? If that is the case, might as well be on a regular premed track. Just my opinion.

when did u get it? still waiting for a letter…so anxious! but congrats!

yeah I don’t know when they come out…it’s been a long wait! hopefully it’ll be here today or tomorrow. Anyone know when they come out for sure?

Recd acceptance yesterday in snail mail

Wow congrats! Still haven’t heard anything yet.

accepted too! but not sure if i’m going to attend - i went to the presidential scholarship weekend and loved the campus but the 30% retention rate is a little unnerving especially with the high tuition!

Also accepted!
I have been lurking around a lot of the SLU med scholars threads and I just wanted to point something out though. I’m from St. Louis and I know a fair number of people who are in the program and nothing is guaranteed. I have seen a lot of people say that its a 98% acceptance if you keep your GPA over a 3.5 and this is not true at all!
One girl I know who was admitted into the med school through the program said that she’s seen a lot of people barely scraping by who made the cut and others who are at the top of her class with GPA’s over a 3.8 didn’t make it.
Her piece of advice was if you end up going to SLU, enroll in med scholars because you shouldn’t waste that possible opportunity. But she also made it very clear that you shouldn’t go to SLU primarily for the med scholar program because it isn’t guaranteed and you could potentially be spending more than you need to for your undergrad since the school is so expensive.

I received my acceptance letter about 2 weeks ago. I’m considering to accept the offer, but since SLU’s tuition is expensive and the program isn’t a guaranteed med school acceptance, I’m still a little skeptical. For those of you in the program, is it easy to get/be involved in research and volunteering opportunities while keeping up the required GPA? And are there any special research and/or volunteering opportunities for Med Scholars?

If you are accepted into the med scholar program, then I would assume you have a very good high school GPA, which means you should be able to get a chunk of scholarship from SLU. That would make going to SLU inexpensive.

If you are a top student at SLU, there are a lot of research and volunteering opportunities out there for you.
