My D has gotten into NYU and Wash U. Leaning toward NYU right now. She is lwaning toward Stern NYU right now. She has also been waitlisted at Northwestern, Rice And Georgetown.

Question:

Should she apply to the waitlist.
Is it too late
what goes on the waitlist request. Does it need an essay.

Please help quick as you know now too much time left!!

If she is leaning towards NYU right now, this is what you do:

Send in the deposit to NYU to secure her spot in the class of 2010.

Now, send letters to whatever schools she still wants to investigate for wait-list status. Should mention her desire and interest in that school as well as some updates for her application. Wait-lists are generally unranked (I think) and I think most colleges, if they choose to take off the list, will base their decision on applicant's interest level.

If your D does get accepted off the waitlist and then chooses to attend, Rice for example, she would have to contact NYU and tell them that she will be attending Rice instead of NYU. NYU would still keep your non-refundable deposit and you would just send a deposit to Rice to secure her place there.

Thanks, but she is resisting applying to waitlist because it requires another essay and she has just about had it. It is me trying to convince her to try as they are all great schools. Can you apply to more than one waitlist school?

Have her just send in the waitlist card and/or email admissions indicating her continued interest and why- ie best fit. She doesn't need to write another essay. If she has won any awards since the original app or updated grades send those in. Then concentrate on NYU, and if she gets off the waitlist at one of the others she can decide then.
