My daughter visited last weekend for an Accepted Students day. She stayed with a friend who is a freshman there and it was a great weekend. She was accepted to the Nursing Program there and whether it was the Nursing presentation or just San Francisco itself, I am not sure, this is the school she likes the most so far. Her friend she stayed with is actually transferring to Boston College next year because she likes the east better and because she feels like many students leave the campus on the weekends. As far as education goes, she is very happy. I think if the financial aid is in the right ball park, this will be the school that my daughter will attend.

I would love to hear any input any USF students may have.

Hi, My son attended the admitted students visit program as well. We live in NY, so we travelled quite a distance. It is a beautiful campus, but it is hard to gauge how the students like it there as the students that were the tour guides are supposed to be positive about the school. It seems like the students get a quality education and most students have more than one major/minor. The cost is high, so am wondering if it’s worth it. USF is my son’s first choice, but I just want to make sure that he understands the whole picture. Do you live in California? Does your daughter’s friend like it there? Thanks a bunch.

Yeah I went to the admitted students day also. Hmm ill just go down the list with numbers:

strength in USF staff’s opinion: USF is located right in the middle of San Francisco. What they don’t tell you is that the main attractions of san francisco is all located on the east side of san francisco, meaning USF is basically by itself and nothing really surrounds it. Union square and all that good stuff is a little far away from the campus and it would take some time to get there or anywhere that is, i guess, fun.

weakness: USF has really really small dorms compared to the other 2 colleges I’ve visited (claremont mckenna and NYU). s

strength: the dorms come equipped with microwaves and refridgerators–something many colleges DONT allow.

strength: USF is all on one block (i think) so everything is really convenient to get to–classes are close by each other, the cafeteria and food machines are near classes. It probably has the most convenient food spots i’ve ever seen on any campus.

Strength: classrooms are pretty nice! chairs are cushioned, they have state of the art technology, basically not the old school stuff hah

weakness: i didnt get any aid from USF. at least not yet, i dont know if they notify us later but im pretty sure i didnt get any scholarships and i had pretty good grades and test scores. and getting a $20,000 scholarship for another private school ranked higher than USF would probably make me choose that over USF.

Hope that helps! I try to pick out the details most people dont mention.

We live in Colorado, and our daughter made the trip alone, so I can only tell you things through her eyes. Her friend she stayed with is transferring, but is clear that she is pleased with her educational experience there. Her roommate who hung out with them all weekend is from Sacramento and is happy with USF and intends to stay. They took the bus all over the city and pretty much had a great vacation weekend. Our decision will be predicated on the financial aid package, and I have not heard encouraging things about the aid at USF. At this point we are in limbo and our daughter has a few more schools to visit, all of them have offered scholarship money and will also be sending financial aid information. Wouldn’t you know they fall in love with the school that is probably not going to be feasible. Let me know anything you may have picked up from your visit.

Babygrl

Thanks for the info! All those little details are really helpful.

The visit to USF was lovely. My son and husband went out to visit in October and really liked the campus and how friendly everyone was. I have also heard that the financial aid package isn’t very generous. I am a little nervous about that. USF is his first choice. He doesn’t want to go to any of the colleges here in NY that offered him scholarships that cover about 1/3 of the total cost. I can’t blame him, SF is gorgeous. As a parent, the distance has me a little nervous, but it’s his life.
At the visiting program, the students all seemed really happy, however, I understand that they’re paid by USF, so I am just not sure about it all. The people that we met with all seemed very nice and helpful. Many of the students had a major and a minor at the minimum, which surprised me. When I was in college most students had a major and that’s all. So, I am kind of rationalizing the cost that my son will get more bang for his buck so to speak. That’s about all that I know. I wish some current students would be on this board.
Thank you for your message. It sounds like your daughter is sold on USF as is my son. Is your daughter thinking about any colleges in your state of Colorado?

Nick10-my stats weren’t amazingly high. 3.48 unweighted GPA, 3.82 UC GPA, 2140 SAT Composite, 32 ACT Composite, good amount of leadership, and a decent essay+supplemental essay.

But when I got that letter back in December stating that I was a University Scholar, I was really, really surprised/pleased.

Haha and I think it helped that I was accepted as one b/c I know USF’s nursing major is pretty competitive…I’d been accepted as undeclared, and when I e-mailed them saying I wanted to change to nursing, the admissions officer said she’d have to look at my app. Then she changed my major to nursing : )

momof3D-I missed the admitted students reception. How was USF’s nursing program, according to your daughter?

Thank you, b0b! You wrote on one of my other posts. I honestly have no idea about the selectivity for their majors. This might sound silly, but I’m not even sure where to find statistics on that sort of info. I’d like to know though.

Np setrada. : ) Lol I actually realized I’d posted on your other one after I posted here, so I thought it was a small coincidence.
Uhmm maybe you could try Wikipedia, or just type “University of San Francisco Media Arts ranking” into Google? That’s what I did for nursing.

Hey guys, if you applied ED/got accepted, I know we don’t have to send in our midyear report, but do you know if we have to send in our final transcript?

yes, I am pretty sure all colleges want final transcripts. Mainly to verify that the student did graduate from high school. My school automatically sends all mid year reports and final transcripts to all colleges that students applied to, even if the student wasn’t accepted to the school, too much hassle of finding out which schools need it and which don’t, I guess they figure it is just easier to do a mass mailing.
