Accounting and Finance major...look better than just one or the other?

Is there any benefit to a major being called Accounting and Finance rather than simply Accounting or Finance? I see jobs listed all the time calling for one or the other (or both.) Would some employers see this major in the same light as a double major, at least, until they see that it has a concentration in Finance?

It depends on how many accounting/finance classes you take in the major. You can probably land a finance job with a bunch of accounting classes and a couple of Finance classes but it would be much harder to land an accounting job with only a couple of accounting classes.

Yes the software that HR uses will pick up on both the accounting and finance keywords. Also they will think you are smarter, and probably assume it’s a double major “Accounting and Finance”.

In terms of the actual job it doesn’t make a difference. Accounting is completely different from Finance. It’s like the difference between working as a doctor and working as a pharmacist. The only major that can do accounting and finance is Econ. Though accounting would still be better for accounting.

How would an economics major be able to do accounting?

I think it depends on your ultimate career goals and where you are trying to go. Are you looking to work in Accounting directly (public, private, auditing, tax)? Or are you looking to work in a finance related position? Or, potentially, a combination of both in some fashion?

And would an Econ major be able to do Accounting? Not sure, I don’t think so because, you don’t take the needed amount of courses to be trained in Accounting with Econ., and you surely wouldn’t have enough credits to sit for the CPA Exam (I don’t think, depending on how the college structures the Econ degree I guess).
