Accounting/Finance for the Federal/State Government?

I'm looking at different jobs possibilities within Accounting and Finance, and I was wondering if anyone had any information or experience working in the federal or state governments? The stereotype I hear most frequently is lower pay but better job security and hours. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think what you hear is probably right. Working for the government, like the IRS, you will see better hours than say public accounting. I am not sure how the government pays in comparison to other jobs like public accounting. Benefits are very competitive with government work

I work for my state as a local and special purpose government auditor. As you mentioned, hours are better than CPA firms, but we get paid competitively compared to CPA firms in my state as well. We’re sort of unusual in that regard, since sales and use tax auditors (a separate division from mine) make considerably less ~25% starting pay). Part of that is because we are required to pass the CPA exam. Just a little anecdotal evidence.
