Accounting/Finance Job Description

Can anyone point me in the right direction for information about where each major will take you as far as jobs?

I understand starting salary at a Big Four firm is around 50k. How does that go up over time and where will that hit a ceiling. Will that job allow me to travel?

Can you get a job at an ibank with a major in accounting? What would the chances be if you were in UT's Business Honors Program?

I do see the thread below me about accounting vs. finance, I'm not interested in the coursework as much as actual jobs afterwards.

I suggest you search the forums a bit. There are a TON of threads covering this topic. Here are some of the more relevant ones (mind you, these are just the ones I participated in--there are plenty more):

Big 4 (and other public accounting firms) reward their strong performers very well. Annual raises can range between 5-15% depending on your reviews and how the economy is doing (most people say to expect 9-10% annual raises). The longer you stay, the more likely you are to participate in the bonus pool. Bonuses can be rather large once you hit the Manager level. Very few people leave because they feel that the money isn't enough--it has more to do with the hours you work.

No reason why you couldn't.

Exactly, your major is rather irrelevant when getting a job at an Ibank. Majoring in finance or accounting isn't really any better than communications or art history in Ibanking

Yes if you go to Harvard or Princeton. But if you go to anything out of the Top 5-10 it is quite different and some business/econ helps a lot.

Thanks for the feedback. I really am pretty lost on what to do for a career but I think most people my age are as well.

Does anyone know how competitive UT's Business Honors Program is with the normal i-banking schools (Penn, NYU, etc). They only accept like 100 kids a year.

And for the 150 hour rule for CPA. Does that just mean 150 credit hours of college education? I'm assuming it can be in any subject? That works out to around a year of credit after the traditional 4 years, but what if I use AP credit to earn a year of college credit?

AP credit should count as long as your college awards you those credits. Each state has requirements as to how much of the 150 credit hours has to be in accounting and business (usually 24 credit hours of each). The other 102 can be in just about anything as long as it's from an accredited 4 year insitution (generally). This is another topic for which it would be a good idea to search.

Have you bothered to look at the top hiring companies list of BHP? It's all the major i-banks. BHP is very well recruited, if you manage to get in I wouldn't worry about jobs.
