Accounting Majors

I’m a transfer student starting this Fall, 2013. I found some great info on the accounting concentration and wanted to share it with all of you.

This link provides some general information about the concentration:
http://www.cob.calpoly.edu/wp-content/uploads/advising.dir/files/concentrations/career-info-sheets/Accounting%20Concentration%202012.pdf

I particularly found this link very helpful. I’m planning on pursuing the CPA route, and this is a timeline that shows what needs to be done and when to do them:

Is anyone planning on joining the Cal Poly Accounting Club (CPAC)? I definitely am.

Hope you guys find this information useful.

I will for sure be joining the Accounting Club, and probably the Veteran’s Club as well. What sealed the deal for me to choose Cal Poly as an accounting major were these two links:

Graduate Status Report showing the earnings of accounting grads and their location

Special designations from two of the Big 4 accounting firms
[Academic Areas ? Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](http://www.cob.calpoly.edu/academic/accounting-and-law/designations/)

Great info guys! I especially like the Graduate Status Report. Nice! Just remember the best thing that you can do after you get some experience in a larger firm and your CPA designation is to join a local firm or take an offer from a client to do in-house work. I worked for Arthur Andersen (in the good old days way before Enron when they dominated the Big 6) and after that at Deloitte for several years in the international consulting area. Most of the guys I know did their time and moved on to bigger and better things with hire salaries to boot. One of my friends (Deloitte and EY alum) went on to be the head international tax guy for Michelin for all of Asia at their regional HQ in Singapore. Now he heads of all international tax for DFS international (Duty Free Shops - in airports, sea ports globally). I moved on to become an independent international investment adviser with clients all over based in LA. My cousin left PWC to take over for some of the top tech firms firms in NY and retired at age 45 a very rich man. Others, started their own firms or joined strong local or regional firms and made partner very quickly. Deloitte, KPMG, EY and PWC are all wonderful places to get training at and then become an alum. Great firms to be “from” if you get my drift. Many of my big firm alum buddies make more money than partners at the Big 4. Although, if you make it to a senior partner at one of those firms you can make a lot of coin. But, the chances are rare and even full partners move on to other greater opportunities.

On the graduate status report, there are no business administration major undegraduates? lol. I thought accounting was just a concentration to Econ or Business Administration, or am I missing something?

Accounting is a concentration to business administration. If you look at the status report, it actually breaks down the salaries by the concentrations. They are not lumped all in the business admin major. I believe that you are required to pick a concentration at Cal Poly, which is why there are no numbers for just Business admin. I may be wrong about that though.

For example, you can see the status report of accounting, financial management, information tech, marketing management, and all the other concentrations in their own category.

@Teddie,
I’ll see you in the CPAC. Thanks for the additional information. E&Y is actually my top firm.

@OsakaDad, thanks for the personal insight on this topic. Always great to hear about real-life experiences.

Lots of great information here. I’m also an accounting transfer student this fall going the CPA route. That timeline looks like a great resource. Thanks for the contributions guys!
