I am torn between pursuing my Accounting degree and obtaining my CPA OR getting a bachelor in business management. I keep hearing from a few people that it is hard to start out in the Accounting field/CPA in your mid thirties. All my work experience is in customer service/administration/process flow in a manufacturing environment. I basically work as I have a bachelor in business but without the degree and pay. I love accounting but nervous of switching careers and wasting my money pursuing it to only find I am too old and no entry level positions with the pay I need. If I go the bachelor in business route I already have over 8 years work experience (but tired of it too).

Thoughts on Accounting VS. Business bachelor?

I have a buddy who owned pizza parlors and sub shops for a number of year. He decided in his 30s to get out and went for an accounting degree. He worked for a few years in a local accounting firm and now he is a Tax Manager in a Big 4 firm. I had a girlfriend who got an accounting degree when she was 40 and found work at a private company. It can be done. As you said after 8 years you are tired of your current work. In another few years, you will be more tired. And who are these people that you keep hearing from and how would they know.

It often doesn’t matter which degree you have. The deal maker/breaker is passing that CPA exam. So get the degree you most easily can, and just make sure you keep the option to take that exam if you decide to do so. Having that exam nearly always opens up more job possibilities and pay. I don’t think you are too old for pursing this. Not at all.

If I pursue the bachelor in accounting the school that fits my schedule is Hiram and the degree is a Bachelor of Arts Major in Accounting and Financial Management. They do offer additional classes for the CPA exam. I am concerned it is a BA instead of a BS, but does this truly matter.

I was torn between the exact same dilemma you find yourself in, except I am slightly younger and my experience was in the aviation sector. After talking with advisers and others, I decided to keep on pursuing accounting. The main reason being that most accounting grads can move into management positions with the general business classes for the degree, and having prior work experience also helps out a lot. A management degree will not be able to transition to accounting work however. Honestly, accounting is just a more versatile degree.

If your want to work in corporate America (management), get an accounting undergraduate degree, work a couple of years, then go to the best MBA school that you can get into . GL

Hello, I am an high school student, and I will graduate 2015. I love the business career, but now I am also interested on accounting. Can you guys give me suggestion what should I do?
