I am a freshman at Indiana University. I'm torn between their Accounting program which prepares you & allows you to sit for the CPA exam after graduation.
Then there's informatics. (Computer Studies). Seems like the new thing but it's not extremely popular yet. It deals with Information Systems, Computer Science, & Human interaction.
Which will be more beneficial? Jobs? Any accountants or informatics major? Give me your job experience. Thank you!

If you love crunching numbers and creating leaps of abstraction to make numbers “fit”… go with Accounting.

IU is a fine school… coming from a UW grad.

You should consolidate your four posts into one. I think you’d get a better response.

I’m not familiar with Informatics and I’d suggest that you do some research at school as to the career opportunities (both short and long term) in this field (ex. what % of students in this major got jobs, where are the working?). I’d try to talk to career placement and some professors if that is possible.

I do know accounting, which is a very stable, very employable field. To become a CPA now you need 150 credits (most BS degrees are around 120 credits) so many students go for a one year masters program to meet that requirement while others can meet it with AP classes or a combination of AP and summer classes (the requiremetns vary a bit state to state). If you do well as an accounting major at IU and interview well you could get a number of job offers. Most people initially go the public accounting (Big 4 if possible) route to build the resume and gain experience.

Thanks for the info! I have set up an appointment with career services to discuss informatics. If it doesn’t go over well, accounting it is. :-)
