Hello,

Is anyone out there in the same boat with an audition scheduled (Juilliard for Vocal Performance) and the National ACDA Honor Choir in March?

I do not know what to do! We already booked plane tickets at $540 round trip and DD accepted her place. Just received notice that she passed prescreening at J and that her audition day is the first and second day of the Honor Choir.

Email from J indicated one should not ask to audition on another day. Do you think the National Chair of the Honor Choir would let her arrive late. DH will gladly escort her to Oklahoma.

Two great honors - so worried -she wants to do both if she can!!

Thanks!

How many days does the Honor Choir rehearse? If it is less than five, I doubt they will allow her to be late, but you can ask. The Juilliard audition is one day, which happens to be the second day of the choir rehearsals, is that correct? Call-backs for Juilliard singers are theory test, in the evening, I think. Where else is she auditioning?

I think the ACDA is a great honor, but even though my son was in it, with no conflict..I don't think he would jepordize a live audition to Julliard if he had applied there. I would make a point of telling Julliard that your d had to drop out of the honor choir in order to be present at that audition. Possibly just having them know she was accepted will be the feather in her cap she needs.

I think its a judgement call no matter how you do it. Seems that at this point in her journey, she is trying to get into the best possible school. Some of these schools are not flexible, so depending on how badly she wants to go to Julliard, I think it bears some very careful thinking.

I think the Honors Choirs and Governors School, etc..all the things my S did in high school, made a good impression for the actual pre-audition/screening. But when it came right down to it, what mattered most was his live audition.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I agree with Papengena. If your D really wants to go to Juilliard, then she needs to make whatever arrangements are necessary to be there and well prepared for the audiiton. If she is lukewarm about Juilliard, then that might change the priorities. In the end, the audition is the make or break event. Also, while she may truly enjoy the ACDA event, she is not a key factor in the success of the chorus; presumably there are plenty of other singers there (my son sang in the ACDA Honors Men and Boy's Choir at the NYC National ACDA convention, and there were something like 300 guys in this group!).
So, it is, in the end an issue of priorities which only your D can decide.
