Acquired GED in 2002 want to go to Undergrad for Bachelor's Degree then Law School

Good day,

I am totally new to this website & forum but for the last few weeks every time I have a college question and type it into the search engine this forum comes up. So this is my short story.

Acquired a GED in 2002 (not my choice) so I "finished" high school a year before I could of finished with the rest of my class.

I went on to travel the world a professional dancer that turned into choreographer. With employment through many major record labels, television networks and management companies I wanted to expand and become more. I didn't want to dance forever so I took a lot of entrepreneurial courses and worked for different media companies as a personal assistant, project manager, casting director etc to learn business through the eyes of an entrepreneur. With the knowledge I gained being around other entrepreneurs I went on and started my own company/brand. My company/brand was quite successful, I was even in the process of developing 2 non-entertainment related business. Then last year I was a victim if a hit and run which turned all my plans to frozen visions due to my injuries. Been in therapy for about 10 months. I'M VERY OPTIMISTIC!!! But, I can't sit and wait for my future to come back to me so I am going after it. I always wanted to return to school and go into Medical, Law or Aviation. I have chosen Law.

Now with a brief description of my background (I have done a lot since 2002 in my life so I have lots to write about)

I know I need to take my SATs. I am preparing for that right now. I just took a practice one just to get a rough, but to the point idea of where my brain is at. Math is where I need serious help and I am looking into that.

What are my chances of getting into a good college in NY or Miami (prefer Miami I need a new atmosphere, I believe I will be miserable going to school in NY all though I will still apply to 2 schools in NY)?

What can I do to make myself look even better as a person in serious want to further my education and becoming a lawyer?

At this point in my life and with experiences I do know what I want to major in. I am interested in Political Science, Business Finance/Accounting, these are attractive to me because business in general is what I adore. I am also interested in Actuarial Science (perhaps as an elective) and English – Professional Writing along with Philosophy. Then off I go to Law School.

I would prefer to move to Miami and school there.

I will be a full time student and also take summer courses.

I always recommend that people take both the ACT and the SAT. Some people simply do better on one than another. You can find which one is higher and then send in the score using a comparison table.

Colleges might look askance at a GED, but if you can show courses taken, grades received, it might be OK. You might need to focus on smaller schools that can give your application more personal attention. Law schools do not care what you major in, but they do care about undergraduate grades, so find a school that offers courses that you are interested in and then do well in them. Good luck.

Since it’s been more than five years since you finished high school, some schools will actually waive the SAT/ACT requirement (make sure to check the transfer admissions page of each school you’re looking at). Although it can’t hurt to take them anyway, especially if you do really well :)

Best of luck!

Good day,

Thank you John2698 and Transferstudent2 the schools I looked into all ask for high school & GED diploma and transcripts and SAT or ACT. Perhaps I should call and see what it would be for my situation? I know law schools don’t care much what I major in but the courses I mentioned are majors that I am truly interested in. I’m an undercover nerd =D

So John2698, they would look at my GED with disapproval? Why do they request it then if their noses turn up? Yeeesssh. I just want to go to school. Interestingly enough I thought it would be a good idea for me to take the ACT & SAT. Right now the goal is to get into college as an undergrad and just work work work.

Transferstudent2, if they waive the SAT/ACT requirement…then what else would they go on to consider you for admission? Life experience???

Thanks again guys!
