ACT Results - Not as High as She Hoped

Somewhat disappointing. English and Reading 36, Math 27 and Science 25 . Writing score was a 9. Composite with MC = 31, English Writing Composite = 33. We don't know much about the Writing Composite, is a 9 or 33 going to look good for D who is hoping to Double Major in English/Biology???

D plans to take the SAT this fall, her PSAT was 212 so we are hoping for a higher SAT. GPA is 3.95 ish. CLEPS, AP's, Dual Enrollement, even one DSST in Public Speaking. I think EC's look good but I am not sure what ECs appeal to colleges, esp. Hillsdale. Few examples: President of Homeschool National Honor Society, many voluteer hours: Therapeutic Equesterian Center, Jr Counselor for Girls Group, Food Bank, Soup Kitchens. Any advise???

i dont think very many EC’s will look bad, but those are all very good scores, especially for hillsdale. that isn’t a real high score for science, but the act science is a bit wierd so i wouldn’t worry about her act score in relation to her major

^ Thanks, she was hoping for a higher score to try for 1/2 tuition or more in scholarships from Hillsdale. If she doesn’t get at least one half paid she probably will have to choose another college. As a likely NMF she is looking at a few smaller colleges that would be a free ride.

yeah i know a lot of people who got in with acts under 30

Okay, I’m a bit confused by your composite listing… what was her final overall score? It looks like a score of 31 or higher and she can qualify for the half ride. I would think her GPA and ECs will make up for a low-end ACT.

A 33 ACT composite score is not a “low end” ACT score. It is, in fact, in the 99th percentile, and according to the Hillsdale website makes your daughter eligible to compete for a 3/4 to full tuition scholarship. It’s a great score. She should be proud!

I meant “low-end” only in context of 31 being the minimum requirement for a half-tuition scholarship. HM says 33 was her D’s “English Writing Composite,” not her full composite, which I think is actually 31 but… well, what does MC mean? :-P

Sorry for the confusion. 31 is the composite score for the multiple choice sections (not including the Writing). We are pleased with the score and all her other accomplishments but 31 is the minimum requirement for the half tuition scholarship which she will need if she goes to Hillsdale. Because the scholarship is competitive we assume that not everyone that qualifies receives the scholarship. She was hoping for a 33 to try for the top scholarship. I have never heard how a college like Hillsdale will view the Writing/English score of 33???

Sorry, I misunderstood. I thought the composite was 33. Well, a 31 is still a really good score for the ACT, and as I understand it, students tend to do better on the ACT (as compared to the SAT) in additional sittings. Perhaps your daughter should retake the test and see if she can nudge that 31 up to a 33 in order to compete for those top scholarships. With a 31 the first time around, she’s probably got a pretty good chance for an improvement.

I received a half tuition merit scholarship. My high school GPA was 4.0 and SAT score 2140 (missed the full tuition mark by 40 points, but only took SAT once). I strongly believe that it is not the variety or nature of EC’s that matters, but rather how you talk about them in your writing, how passionate and attached you are to them. I described 1 EC, described why I valued it, and showed what I learned from it.

This was her second ACT. She took her first a year ago to identify areas of weakness before taking the “real” one because as homeschoolers we don’t have many testing opportunities. This was the ACT required by the State of Michigan for the Broken-Promise Scholarship Money.

Her PSAT was 212 so we are thinking that it may be better to focus on the SAT which we heard was better for those strong in English/Reading areas.

I have never seen ACT in my life, so I cant help you there. :)

She can major in English, or any other subject at Hillsdale with that score. And just know, she should be prepared NOT to earn an A. Very few students do (though your D could easily be the exception.).

Homeschool mom! Don’t panic! If your D is accepted, Hillsdale will make it possible for her to attend! I daresay that they have better fin aid than many colleges out there, and their endowment enables them to help you defray the costs. Very few schools have Hillsdale’s ability to self fund.

^ Thanks for the info. I know I sound a little stressed, I think it is because of the last 4 week push to try for a 5 in AP Bio, AP Psych and AP Studio Art, D is doing all as self-study. I am not strong tech wise and today had to figure out how to photograph and/or scan, edit and download art work in on-line AP portfolio - with a great deal of help from 13 yr old son.
No “A” will be a first but I already warned her, it sounds like a good character building experience :).
