ACT Science and Reading

What can I do to prepare for the Science ACT other than take a bunch of practice tests (which I am doing). Can you guys make a list of general Science knowledge that might be tested on the ACT. E.g. the boiling point of water is 100C. Facts like that that I should know before going in on test day.

Also, I need some tips for tackling the reading section and the science sections in general.

Thank you!

The science section really doesn’t test on knowledge in the sciences. It really tests your comprehension with regard to results/data and how to analyze graphs/tables. So to get better, I would do practice tests! That’s what I’m doing–and try to focus most on the sections you have trouble with.

With respect to reading, I have difficulty there as well. My problem was with timing, so I am currently enrolled in a speed reading course.

Try to pinpoint your weaknesses and focus solely on those. Hope this helps! Good luck on your test!

Science is ALL ABOUT TIMING, which I’m sure you’ve figured out by now. The best advice I’ve gotten is to save the opposing opinions passage for last. That passage (debating two sides of an argument, usually a lot of reading) has the most questions related to it (I believe it’s always seven) and many students get bogged down reading through the passage. If you do the graph - related questions first, you will be able to save all of your remaining time to do this section. And you don’t have to read carefully - just skim, you won’t have enough time otherwise.
Hope that helps! It brought my score up from a 28 to a 34 on my last practice test (time is always a huge problem for me) so knock on wood it’s not just an easy test!

Thanks guys.

here’s the deal, i took the act, and everything was 34 and above, save science, which ended up as a 29…bringing down my composite to a 33 :frowning:
i have a friend, on the other hand, who got 29 and below on everything else, but ACED the science section (didn’t study/prep at all)
so moral of the story: science is all about “critical reading” skim quickly…typically ignore the time consuming passage at the beginning, unless a specific question refers to it, just get the graphs
i’m trying to follow my own advice…i think it worked b/c on a red book science test, pulled off a 36!
GOOD LUCK THOUGH…i’m taking it this sept.
