ACT Science Section

My December 2008 ACT score was

Composite 31

Math 33
English 33
Reading 30
Science 29
Essay 8

It was my first ACT and I took the test cold.
I was wondering if there were any tricks for scoring higher (esp. in science!)
Anyone got any?

^ very similar to my experience… i got a 31 overall with like a 29 in science (and i am going to major in bio :-S)…i got into Cornell CAS with no major Hook

if you’re ambitious, just take it again and study…for the science section, i have heard that you shouldnt read/ understand the whole experiment, just read the questions and find the answer as fast as you can…

I ended up getting a 34 on the ACT, with my particular strengths being reading(36) and science (35). (English-34, and math-31 for what it’s worth). I’ll break down my general recommendations by category.

English-- skip all the reading that isn’t underlined/numbered. It’s pointless to actually read the passages when all they’re asking about is technical things.

Math-- Not my strongest suit, I got very good with doing things on my calculator (a la practice) so i could work faster, still had to use the bubble method on the last 5 or so though.

Reading–read the questions first! quickly read the questions, then go back and speed-read the passage, making a small pencil mark next to anything important relating to the questions. It’s probably the only way to successfully finish all of the reading.

Science-- never, ever, read the paragraph, unless it’s the only info provided. It’s a total waste of time in general. Take about a 10 second scan over the graphs/charts provided to get a feel of what they’re for, then jump into the questions. Again use the charts/graphs for answering the questions, not the written, generally unhelpful, things. Try to not get overwhelmed by unknown terms/ confusing numbers. They in general don’t really matter and are simply thrown in to try and distract you and slow you down. t

If you have any more questions ask away and I’ll try to help.

In general, you don’t even need to know much about science to do the science section. It is almost all about interpreting graphs and charts.

As spunaugle and Me=pomegranate!! said, don’t waste time actually reading through all of the info they give you for the science section. Look at the first question, find the answer from the charts. Look at the second question, find the answer from the charts. The important thing to remember is not to crash on the science test; it’s the last one, and it’s easy to be drained from the previous tests and lose focus. Just remember to stay focused, keep an eye on the clock, and you should do fine.

Good luck!
