math and science sections

I took the ACT in october and got a 30 (E:31, M:29, R:30, S:29). no prep. I'm taking it in 2 weeks with my school and what not. I just took a few practice english tests and averaged a 34/35 on them. I also took a few reading and got around 33/34. My main concerns are math and science. In actuality I'm pretty good at math (Calc AB as a junior), but i always seem to score lower than expected on math. From what I've looked at I always seem to get the "hard/challenging" section wrong. Do you guys have any tips on how to approach some of these problems? Also, for science, is it true that the best strategy is to just look at the charts and questions and not bother looking at the passages?

I can safely say that not reading the science passages will really hurt your score. Quite often, the passages give you minute details about the items, and there’s usually a question or two where the answer is found in the passages.

^ I disagree. You may have to skim the passages in the science, but reading them through takes too much time. I have a 35,36, and a 34 on the science by glancing at the experiment, looking at the questions, then skimming and picking out answers.

But different things work for different people.

& I thourghouly disagree with hotinpursuit. DONT READ THE DIRECTIONS!! Go straight to the questions. If nearly 75% of the questiosn are read and interpret a table or graph. Only when needed go and skim the tid-bits they give you. I got a 36 on science as a sophomore and a 33 this time using this very method.

I also disagree with hotinpursuit and agree with the others. Go straight to the questions and refer to the text/charts only when you need to. The science test has a quick pace to it and you don’t have enough time to read the whole text and all of the directions. I got a 30 C as well, but a 32 on the science.

Hmm maybe I’ve been doing science passages wrong all this time. idk. I guess it’s personal preference cuz my technique got me a 35 last sept. in science, so I never bothered changing it.

Well I guess ill see how that worked out when I get my feb. score in a week or so.

I agree with most of you but with a slightly different angle. I like to skim the explanation and the charts first and then move on to the questions so that I have a general idea of the material before confronting the questions. I got a 36 on science doing this.

Isn’t the next test in April?

I got a 30C, but with reading at 33, english at 34, and math/science at 26…

I am only in algebra II, so I can sort of understand what’s going on with math…but science?? The questions are easy, but I am ALWAYS rushed for time…

I think that we should compile a few common subjects into one thread. That way, we can answer others’ questions.

Is there a math, reading, English, and science section on here where we can post questions? I think that we should formulate threads devoted to those parts.

I live in Michigan and every person in my state takes the ACT/MME(our michigan only test) in March
