ACT science section

Hey! I am trying to improve on this section but I can't. i have taken so many practice tests and I am still not improving! What strategy's do you recommend? I ususally just go to straight to the questions and answer them because reading just takes too much time!

thanks so much.

I’m currently trying this technique as well, I usually skim the paragraphs (for only 3-5 seconds or so) and then give a little more attention to the graphs and tables. We’ll see how this works in the real ACT.

Good luck!

I usually read the questions and then refer back to the passage. It’s hard to retain the fine details that are inherently imbedded in the science section. I don’t know, it’s personal preference, whichever way you can move the quickest.

ah, the ACT science section.

The trick is to NOT read the passages unless one of the questions makes you. The science test is designed to be far too long for the amount of time they give you. Skip the passages, move on straight to the questions. They can all be answered with the figures and graphs and stuff.

I got a 34 on the science section with this strategy.

I did the same thing as the above poster and scored a 36 on science. Questions first, then when needed read the passage quickly to get the answer. Science, IMO, is toughest on time so you need to read and analyze the graphs quick

Science is a mother. I’ll leave it at that

I got a 36 by doing this.

If you’re good at science, you can get a good score. I got a 33 on science with out studying, or using any strategies. I didn’t even study/prep at all. True story.

Go in with a positive attitude. I went in with a “ohh another science section thats about to ram me” I was consistantly getting a 26-28 on science. Yesterday I went into science with the “you know what screw you science its your turned to be rammed”… 35 minutes later and I have a 32 on science. HELL YEA!

I second “Go in with a positive attitude.” You have no time to start panicking when a certain passage in science confuses you. Just keep focusing.

Sometimes science can **** you over, but sometimes you get lucky and you breeze through certain passages. Definitely don’t bother reading the paragraphs, you’re not going to absorb if you try to skim it anyway.

Hi, everybody.
I am just getting acquainted with the ACT, considering to take it to make my application files broader. So, my question is: Do you need to know anything particular in science in order to answer those questions or just reading the preceding passage gives the required understanding of the topic?
Thanks =)

Ruslan- i dont think so. its just interpreting graphs and stuff.
Also, does reviewing your mistakes help? I don’t do this. Is this why I am not increasing. Do similar types of questions repeat itself on the science, becase I always thought the passages were random…thats why i never look through my mistakes.

Yes, sometimes you do need background knowledge to answer the questions. I believe this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/act-preparation/958128-act-science-compilation-background-knowledge.html</a> gives sufficient examples of what kind of background knowledge you might need.
