ACT Science--thanks CC

When my son took the ACT last Feb with no preparation, the first words out of his mouth when he came out of the building were that the science was impossible, that he needed Bio2, chem2, and physics2 to pass and that he absolutely would not take the test again. He was right about his science score (he got a 24) but wrong about the ACT; his SAT scores were the equivalent of 150 points lower. After reading several comments on CC about the science test actually being more of a reading test, I convinced him to try again. Without any focused prep, his science score went up from 24 to 33. Without the helpful advice of CC parents, he never would have attempted the test the second time.

Congrats to your son. :)

Yeah…we followed Curmy’s advice for that pesky Science Reasoning for DS1. It helped a lot!!!

Key word- reasoning.

Somebody wanna post Curmy’s advice? too lazy to search…

Yay!!! Congrats! Thank you for the feedback!!

(My very confused DD showed me one of her practice ACT questions. I took a look and a light bulb went on: this stuff had to be approached as graph interpretation and chart reading, because there was no way an average HS senior would know some of the concepts in depth. DD followed the advice, did very well and spread the word that there was very little science in the science section).

i’m another one thanking curmudgeon!! sons science went up to 35. rodney it basically was, dont spend all your time reading the questions and worrying that the topic is not something you know, concentrate on the graphs and charts the answer is there. i think if i remember correctly the example he gave was …ie the question is something about dew point…child freaks out, doesnt know about dew points, but it doesnt really matter, if he/she checks the graph the answer is in there.

Mt DD did the same thing. Found the reading of the graphs to answer the science questions. She stopped being "freaked out " by ACT science when I sat down and raced her on a practice test. I convinced her most of the science had not even been discovered when I was in school. She beat me by one point.
