Does Northwestern superscore the ACT? Should I send in all my ACT scores or just my highest composite?

yeah they do, but I think it depends. if you have a decently high score already from one sitting (like a 34 is not that different from a 35, for example) then you should just send one sitting. but if super scoring makes a significant difference (30->33 or something) then you should send in multiple scores.

Send in all your reports if you benefit from superscoring. A superscore is a superscore is a superscore. The fact NU uses superscore necessarily means they will not consider your score differently if you sent in one report instead of five (or five instead of one).

No offense to the above two people. But it is stated that Northwestern does not superscore.

^ I also thought this was true as NU also stated this at the information session we went to. But there is a parent on this site who called and talked directly to admissions and they said that they DO (maybe now?) superscore. Perhaps this is a new development? nugraddad can you share the information you got? You can search his posts re. this.

Ah, my apologies. My advice was largely a response to theworried’s advice that you shouldn’t send more than one report if you only slightly benefit from superscoring - I didn’t look into Northwestern’s superscoring policy (or lack thereof).

they do superscore. i already applied and schools that don’t let you superscore don’t have the option of sending in multiple scores on the ACT, but for northwestern it did. meaning they do let you superscore. and i also asked at an information session.

well my theory comes from this: really, when it comes to the difference of, say, 1, ACT scores really don’t make much difference. I guarantee that you will not be rejected just because you have a score of a 32 while another candidate has a 33. what seems to matter more, from looking at different decisions on different threads, are things like the content of your essay, your commitment and success on extracurriculars, etc.

if you’re sending in scores from 3 different sittings just to raise your ACT score from a 30 to a 31, it’s really not gonna matter/if anything they’re gonna be able to see the lower scores you got from multiple sittings. and b/c they superscore, it shouldn’t matter, but admission officers are only human and thus they will get an impression of some type from seeing poor scores from multiple sittings.

not to say that this is correct, but just something to consider.

Northwestern does not superscore the ACT, they only superscore the SAT

you’re wrong…but okay

Even if they don’t superscore, is there any harm in sending all my scores in, hoping they’ll look at my highest subscores?

okay, i don’t mean to sound aggressive or judgmental but you really seem to be misunderstanding the concept of superscoring. if you go to the ACT website right now and click on “send my scores”, for schools that allow superscoring, they will have the option of sending multiple scores. for schools that don’t, you can only send in one score.
this means two things:
- i’m not sure about what NU has done in their previous years, but this year they do superscore because i’ve already applied and i saw that northwestern gave the option of sending multiple scores. i also asked at an NU info session.
- if indeed NU doesn’t superscore, you can’t send multiple scores. the option is not available on the ACT website.

i hope that clarified some things.

This is not true. You can send multiple scores to all schools. What they do with the scores is up to the school. Just because you can send more then 1 score does not mean they superscore. Often schools will look at the best individual scores but only use the best composite from 1 sitting as opposed to super scoring.

Ah!!! Nugraddad!! Please weigh in with your information :)!

Earlier in the year, I called NU Admissions, and was told that NU DOES superscore the ACT and the SAT.

You are all invited however to make your own call.

They will also use your best score, between the SAT and ACT which helped out my D

Good luck to all

In the future, just call them.

After speaking with NU found out they currently DO NOT superstore.
