act scores on high school transcript

My son has not sent official scores to his colleges ( waiting on oct act result to decide which to send ) yet when he checked his status on a few of the state schools he saw they had all of his scores even last Jan SAT which he had no intention of sending. We are concerned that the scores came from his high school transcript. Is this possible ? Can these scores be removed from the transcript and enable him to only send the official score date he chooses as is his right ?The only applications so far which have been completed are the state schools. The current high school transcript has already been submitted to the common application but he has not filed the individual applications yet.

It’s entirely possible the ACT scores were on the transcript. You can ask the schools to remove it. As to whether it is your child’s “right” to only report scores that they want, that’s debatable. For instance any ACT taken for state education requirements is NOT owned by the student but by the school. Talk to the school and see if they’ll take them off. If not, don’t think that it will necessarily be bad. Just about all schools state they will use the highest score.

Yes, many high schools put all your scores on your high school transcript that is sent to colleges. A number of colleges, even an ivy, Brown, accept scores off the transcript rather than requiring official scores from the testing agency. Whether the scores can be removed from the transcript is an issue between you and the high school. Some have asserted that the high school’s providing the scores violates privacy rights under FERPA, but that is a doubtful claim, since making a request to send a transcript to a college amounts to a waiver of any such privacy rights as to anything that usually appears on the high school transcript. Your high school may or may not agree to remove the scores.

As to effect, colleges assert they use the highest scores when you submit multiple tests and do not hold lower scores against you. As one may suspect, many have a difficult time convincing themselves that is true.

Thank you. Will check with his school Monday. Oct act scores come out Tuesday. If there is no change or improvement from sept test than I guess it won’t make any difference but would still prefer his weak sat from last Jan would not show up on the application
