How COLLEGES look at our ACT scores...

If u add up the four scores in each section and divide by four u get ur ACT composite score... I get that.

But i got a 31.25 and that rounded down to a 31. And if someone got a 30.5 that would round up to a 31. Do colleges look at that difference and break down the scores or just look at the composite score?

Colleges will look at both. A composite score is a good metric for comparing diverse applicants with a wide range of scores, but higher subscores will always look more impressive.

For example, Applicant 1 and Applicant 2 are both applying to Flagship State U with the following ACT scores (along with identical transcripts, extracurriculars, etc.):

Applicant 1 30 Composite (rounded down from 30.25)
30 English
31 Math
30 Reading
30 Science

Applicant 2 30 Composite (rounded up from 29.5)
29 English
30 Math
28 Reading
31 Science

Flagship State U will receive a score report for each applicant containing the composite score, the four section scores, and any subscores within each section. Undoubtedly, both applicants will be in the same ballpark (due to having the same composite score and identical stats), but Applicant 1 will be more competitive because of his/her higher and more consistent section scores.
