-My son ( Junior year) took Kentucky's state mandated ACT March 18, 2014. How do students get their results for state mandated tests? Does it take longer for ACT to release results from state mandated testing?
-He said the Science section was AWFUL! He is quite sure his previous score of 31 on Science will be lower. However, he also thought the Math, English, and Reading sections were less difficult. Hopefully...he scored in the 30s!
- Are state mandated test scores generally higher or lower than National scores?

Our experience has been that the state mandated scores are no different than taking the test at any other regular testing date. And I can’t remember exactly but I don’t think it takes any longer than normal either to receive the scores.

That was our experience ^^ If I recall the state test was labeled ACT-MI or something that differentiated, but it showed up when the kids logged into the ACT account. It also was on their high school transcript.

That was also our experience (MI) - scores were released in the normal time frame, and they were treated just like any other score. My S scored a 33, so he didn’t take the test again - no issues with using the state score for admissions, because it is no different than any other ACT testing.

Thanks so much for the info…I am glad to know the score will show up on my son’s ACT STUDENT account.

I wasn’t aware that any states mandated such testing. Is this in place of the testing that some states devise on their own, or is it in addition to it?

In MI, it’s in addition.

Quite a few states require the ACT in addition to Michigan. My kids took it a second time because our state ACT did not use the optional writing component so I wanted the kids to have an ACT + writing.

Here’s the latest map click on the test link to find the states that use the ACT test, there are at least 10, I did not count…there are other ACT related things like PLAN, WorkKeys that some states use.

In Kentucky, the ACT mandated testing is in addition to state testing.

…like MI, the writing portion of the ACT is NOT given during the state mandated ACT test…UNFORTUNATELY,

It is if the school chooses to pay for it. My school (South Carolina) is doing the April 23 state test and we have writing section because my school decided it was worth paying for. It is optional though…

My kids highschool must choose to pay for the writing portion because we’re in MI and they took it with writing during the state mandated testing. S14 was part of some pilot program his junior year where they were given the test in October first, then March. The October one did not include writing.

The State mandated ACT in MI as part of the MME includes the writing, while the IL mandated ACT does not. I think the policy may have changed as my D did not pay anything for the state mandated test in MI.

We didn’t have to pay a red cent for the ACT/MME combo at my cash-strapped high school when I took it in 2009, and I definitely took the writing portion. When did that policy change?

Billscho when did they add mandatory writing to the Michigan test? - my last graduated last year so in spring of 2012 the writing was still not included.

My D took it last year and writing was included. So the change must be for class of 2013 or 2014. Are you sure writing is not included for the class of 2012?

As of spring 2014, the PSAE (Prairie State Achievement Exam) for Illinois includes the ACT plus writing (as well a couple of other tests).

@EllieMom
That is great. I remember reading a couple post last year that the students at IL needed to take the ACT again since the mandated one did not include writing. What a waste of time and money.

Billscho, thanks my son high school class of 2013 did not have the writing portion in then junior Spring of 2012 (Michigan public). I just pulled his transcript just in case I was experiencing a lapse in memory. I’m glad they are including it now even though most kids take it twice. Sounds like the “states” are getting the message that many colleges ask for ACT + writing.

^ Yes. That was the greatest thing. My D only took ACT once and it was free. ;)
