I see the recommended time to take the ACT is spring of junior year. My son's situation is that he is very busy with a winter sport and he has to work hard to keep up with his normal school work. Test prep would be very difficult. If he takes the test in October 2010 (the 9/2010 is not available in the US?) he could prepare during the summer.

He will have completed Algebra II and biology, however he will not take chemistry until his junior year...will this kill his chances at a decent score or can he deal with any chemistry related test issues by studying ACT test materials?

It would only matter at all on the science tests. But, most of the questions are about interpreting graphs and such. If your son is usually good at that type of thing, it shouldn’t really make a difference. And, he can always take it again later.

the September test IS available in the US; I read the ACt site wrong also; they are talking about it not being given in “US territories”, not mainland…(like Guam, etc)

Although the ACT recommends students take the test in the spring of their junior year, it all depends on the rigor of your son’s high school curriculum. As the ACT is more of a knowledge based test, many students enrolled in schools with advanced curriculums can take the test sooner. My son, for example, took the ACT in June of his sophomore year and scored a 36.

Thanks everyone. Rodney, they stated it more clearly for the 9/2009 test…thanks for the heads up. Seems to be no downside to taking the test early. He can always retake in the event of a problem.
