Sorry, I was not aware of this policy. Will do! Thank you
Update - we are still waiting for ACT to respond to the latest review. Taking longer than the last time. Still plan to fight this til the end. Pass the word on to all who have been effected by this. The more exposure the better! Anyone wanting my contact/email info let me know. I will message you.
Devastating. My son took a great online review course, spent the time to prepare, and we witnessed his results on multiple practice exams. ACT disrupted his senior year by rejecting his score. His confidence has been crushed. Their statistical arguments for rejecting are flawed.
It certainly appears they target mud-year seniors. We are talking it to arbitration. My daughters confidence was also crushed, but now we are, turning this into a lesson on fighting for what’s right!
This is absolutely awful and crazy. I have never heard of this where we live. Is this happening in certain states or areas?
This happened to a very close friend, and it was a horrible experience. For this very reason, my children will stick to the SAT.
I have heard from people all over. Everyone needs to report to Reuters, US Secretary of Education, Fair Testing and go to arbitration. Arditration only costs $200 for the student Anna over $2000 for ACT. if more people arbitrate then it will cost them.
Any updates?
Update - we received our paperwork and instructions to pay for the arbitration. I understand this is a lengthy process so bare with me on updates. I will keep everything posted. Thank you for keeping in touch!
Not sure where the BYU came from. My daughter is not going to BYU. Understand that this is not about her getting into a school. She is already in the fall semester at your university. This is about fighting for what is right and not allowing ACT to get away with this and continue this with future students. They bully these seniors at the most vulnerable time, right at graduation, knowing these students will not fight. For us the finances were not an issue but for others, scholarships are being lost and acceptance is being denied. It is not right. Hope this helps the understanding. Thanks for your thoughts!
This is happening all over but I do believe they are targeting certain students and areas. They refused information when I asked about specifics on area, sex, origin and ethnics. We know that there are significant issues with cheating re the SAT. I am glad they are on top of this to be honest. I am sure it is frustrating but there must be reasons for their decisions.
I am researching just that. I believe there are reasons. Supposedly the ACT is a non profit organization, however I feel there is an incentive for them to do what they are doing. Possibly monetary from colleges, universities or scholarships. They go off of statistics yet when students prove their ability through prep, tutoring and improved scores they still take them away. They are even taking multiple score away from students when the improvements are consistent. Isn’t the consistency of improving multiple times a statistic? Something to think about. My daughter took the ACT in Oct and Dec. got a 25 on both tests. Different locations, different proctors with different students. ACT took both scores away because they were an increase of 5 points over her tests scores from the prior year. We are not fighting for 1 score, or 2 scores we are fighting them because this kind of treatment towards hard working students is not right. I hope our arbitration is successful and encourages more parents and students to stand up to them rather than retest and back down. Thank you for your thoughts and reaching out. Best wishes.
UPDATE***** Arbitration is well on it’s way. We have paid the fee and am currently disclosing all the individuals who are supporting us with documentation. We have requested to be present for the arbitration hearing. Waiting to hear the results as they have to inform ACT and give them a chance to respond. STAY TUNED! Good luck to all facing this similar challenge!
Thanks for updates! We applaud your resolve! It was so destructive to our senior’s confidence…he worked so hard to improve his score and, then, was so disappointed. It compromised his opportunities; luckily, he rebounded…still getting great grades, enjoying school, and regained confidence. Keep up the fight!
Did you ever go through arbitration or retest? We are in the middle of arbitration now. Curious of your outcome if you did.l
My son received a letter from the ACT two weeks ago similar to those described in this post. If there is anyone in this thread who can provide contact information for an attorney with experience in this matter and/or any other student advocates such as Steve Stecklow at Reuters, please send.
We prepared a package of information that we sent to ACT and requested information in return. We initially thought that we had solid information that any reasonable person at the ACT would review and clearly see that my son earned his scores; after reading this thread, I am even more concerned. It seems that regardless of the information that you may provide, it doesn’t look as if you have a chance to get a judgement in your favor. Guilty until proven innocent. We received the letter almost 5 months after my son took the test. College applications have been submitted with the rest due in a month or so. We are outraged and very concerned. He did not cheat, but it seems that it will be a very hard uphill battle.
If you have any new insights and/or contacts that may be able to help, please let me know.
Do you have an attorney that you are using for arbitration who has experience with similar cases?
@kodiman24 this is SO sad. Can I ask what type of score your son had and was this a first or second sitting? I feel so horrible for you and others.
