Do I have to take the ACT if I'm taking the SATs? Is there a difference between the two tests? Can I practice for the SATs and use the same prep material for the ACT? Do some colleges prefer one over the other?

you don't need to take the ACT if you take the SAT, but you should at least take a practice test, because you might do a lot better on one of the tests.
You'll really need different prep material, although a lot of test-strategies and basic material will overlap.

How about you see how much you get on the SAT? If you're not happy, try the ACT once before retaking.

take one, but still take at least a practice test for the other.

yes. the act focuses more on testing you on things you learn in high school. the sat is more of a logic and reasoning test. there is science on the act but not the sat.

no, they are basically totally different tests. if you dont want to buy a new prep book, go to value village or goodwill and try to find one.
