ACT writing graders have graded essays INCORRECTLY. 35 Composite with 22 in Writing! December 2015

I strongly believe that the December 2015 ACT has graded many essays incorrectly.

When I got my writing score of 22, I was shocked, and thought it might have been due to poor handwriting. My composite score is 35 and I regularly get writing scores in the 30s.

However, I spoke to many friends, and they say that they also are getting impossibly low ACT scores.

My fears were confirmed when I saw multiple threads on CC complaining of their writing scores.

I have emailed the ACT and encourage all other students who believe their scores are incorrect to do the same. You all should also have your guidance counselors speak to college admissions as well as act.

Same. 35C, 36E, 36R, 22W.
Something doesn’t seem right - although I do admit I have poor penmanship.

I did see many threads on strange writing scores; I’m not sure whether our fears are legitimate, or our skills are lacking.

I got a 36 writing in September. 35 in October… 26 in December.

lol

however, the prompt was much harder to answer in the december ACT. two of the perspectives, one and three if i recall correctly, were far too similar… this made it harder to create counter arguments/pick one perspective, which I had done in my previous high-scoring ACT essays. Still, I thought my December essay was going to be at least a 30.

No, it’s not just you. My son scored a 650 on the SAT writing section, has won numerous writing awards at school, is taking AP Lit and got a 16 on the ACT writing score. I laughed out loud!

It is worth pursuing. I dont know if a rescoring can be requested but it appears there needs to be an accountability review to determine if these are flukes or evidence of a problem.

Yes, get a rescore. $50 and it will be refunded if the score goes up. They will not drop the score

Request your rescore ASAP. There is a time limit from the date of the test to request this.

I take honors English classes and get good grades on writing in AP history classes yet also got a bad score (20) on the act writing. I got a 30 composite with a 33 in both English and reading so clearly something is up. Maybe consider a re-score???

Our request for rescore came back with no change (so no $50 refund)!

^ Same with DD.

It is definitely worth the fee to have it rescored when there is such a seeming discrepancy.

@thinmints and @4beardolls How long did it take them to respond? We are waiting on same.

@youngbeck I’d guesstimate about one month from the time we mailed the request and until we received the paper back in the mail.

It took about a month and the result is posted on your account. It was about another 2-3 weeks before the report came in the mail. We never got the report with the first score in the mail, I guess they rescored before they sent out the hard copy. I am still waiting for the $50 back which they said would be an additional 3-5 weeks from the time they re-scored. Everything takes them FOREVER!

It seemed forever. Maybe it was about 5 weeks.
