<p>I took the ACT without writing and I am retaking it again with the writing. Is the ACT like the SAT in that if i do better on the first try, can i combine my essay score with that instead of the one i took it with? i dont really understand how it works.</p>

<p>You actually have two issues. Majority of colleges do not superscore ACTs, but some do. However, some of those that do may not accept an ACT without writing at all and thus that test you have without the writing section may not be considered even if the college otherwise does superscore.</p>
