My son is a junior and he will be taking his ACT's a 2nd time this June. It will probably be his last time taking them as he received a 32 the 1st time and is hoping to achieve a higher score since most of the schools he is applying to will superscore the results. My question is about the writing section. He does not want to retake that section again (his first time he received a 31 in writing comprised of a 33 in English and a 9 out of 12 on the essay) He has always done well with the writing scores on the SAT, ACT, and the AP test that he has taken thus far, so I think he has nothing to loose by taking it again. Does anyone know if the colleges will even superscore if he has one ACT with writing and one ACT without?

afaik, if his schools are superscoring, he can pick the writing score from his first one. however if his schools require the essay, they might conceivably decline a better writing score from a non-essay sitting.

I am making an educated guess, anyone with better info should def jump in. but i’d say find out if those schools req the essay and if they do, he has nothing togain from skipping it and potentially getting a higher but unusable writing score this time.
