hello everyone!

what are your thoughts on getting an acting coach for prepartion for college auditions?

i ask because some schools prefer you to not get coaching (cmu)..

but anyway lol...

how do i go about finding the right acting coach for me? what do i look out for?

if anyone has any reccomendendations (sp?) for any acting coaches in the NY/NJ metro area, it would be nice of you to share this info =) negative/positive feedback will also be a BIG BIG help!

Deeny, these are excellent questions to be asking here. I hope you get many replies. Just so you know, most applicants who are auditioning for BFA programs get some sort of coaching in voice and acting, even if applying to CMU. Those applying to CMU are usually applying to several other schools as well and preparing materials with coaches or teachers.

For this part of your question, however, we ask that people respond to you via e-mail or PM with names of recommended coaches and references and not ON the forum itself. Please consult the Terms of Service regarding the promotion of services, as well as links to personal/business websites. Thank you.

oh okay, i wasnt aware of that! lol, PM's will be nice..

Can someone PM me as well with some information on acting coaches in the NJ/NY metro area

Been reading myself a lot into this as a parent and I really would like someone who is really good, reputable. If anyone has any recommendations at all in the canton Ohio area or the Ohio area in general; please send me a message. I would be forever grateful.

I know a couple of people who’ve had great success with a coach from the NJ/Philly area— have asked them to respond.

At least 4 offspring of CC posters (including mine) had a great experience with Lisbeth Bartlett in Philly. The other CC Posters are Connections, NJTheaterMom and GlassHarmonica. The latter two are the ones who recommended her to me. Just google her and you will find her web site. I can’t recommend her highly enough. No way would my daughter be at UNCSA without her help. She is wonderful with this process. Has a tremendous library of plays to help with monologue selection. She works with the kids to help them discovery what works for them. She was a long time stage actress with Broadway credits to her name. For the last several years help kids with getting into colleges is a big part of what she does.

There’s quite a bit of coach-specific discussion (praise not deemed promotion?) in the Musical Theater Major forum

Jennie Eisenhower is a great coach, but if you’re looking for vocal coaching, I recommend Amanda Morton. Also, another acting coach is Alex Keiper; they’re all based in Philly. Amanda has worked with Broadway folks and these are big regional names

ActingDad, I am advising a current applicant for BFA Acting programs from the Philly area and got Lisbeth’s name from some others too and recommended her to my student and he is working with her and all is well.

I have never known of anyone working with Jennie or Lisbeth, but have many many friends and family with success and nothing but praise for the acting coaches at MTCA, most are located in your area and near NYC. Also lots of folks here on CC who have praise for them recently and from past years. They have been around for many years and I think that years of experience and the knowledge that brings are important. But you need to judge that for yourself. Picking the right coach is a personal thing, in my opinion. You should interview them first. My friends did that and were very pleased.
