Some of you might remember me. I auditioned at a number of programs this past year and was not accepted. I have chosen to attend Ithaca College as an English major and have already made several wonderful opportunities for myself and reserched many others. However, after seeing how much more excited I am about my private voice lessons and dance class than my intro to poetry class, I'm starting to consider re-auditioning for the program the next year, which I know holds an extremely slim chance of acceptance, but it never hurts to try. And try again ;) After taking a long, hard look at myself artisticly, I've concluded that it was my acting which probably hurt me most in auditions. I have a fantastic voice teacher and have improved so much since I started with her a year ago, even just since my audition. I am confident in my singing, but I know if I have even a snowball's chance of being considered I'm going to have to do some hardcore acting work.

Therefore, my question:

Does anyone know any absolutely fantastic acting coaches in either Southern CT or up in Ithaca? I'm not sure I'm going to do this yet. I'm tossing some ideas out there. But if I do, I'm going to go all for it, so extremely expensive coaches are an option. I'm looking for someone who can really transform my abilites. I have good natural instincts, but I need a lot of refinement. If you want to message or email me instead of posting them here, that's cool with me.

Thanks so much and I hope somebody can help!

Since you are in Southern CT, I recommend you take a train to New York and work with a coach there. There are many top notch acting pros who specialize in coaching for auditions, including auditions for admission to school. (I can give you at least two names of wonderful coaches if you PM me).

Also, another way to train is to watch excellent actors at work. If you can, see some plays or at least rent high quality films and pay close attention to the acting. Some good films to start with are: Kramer vs. Kramer and The Godfather.

Good luck to you. I hope you get accepted into the program of your dreams.

I tried to pm you and it wouldn't let me. Then I tried email and it wouldn't let me either. I'd love the recommendations, however, so if you could message or email them to be I'd be extremely grateful :) Thanks again.

I so admire your determination and tenacity!! It takes a big person to look at themselves honestly and try to pinpoint where they may have gone wrong. Please keep stay in touch with how you progress. I smell success. ;)

Thank you very much! I really appreciate that comment :D I will definately stay in touch to report my progress and to try and help other people with everything I've learned :)

Okay, sort of in the same line as all this, can someone explan to me what an "audition coach" is? I think that´s the term. I´ve been reading it around the board and I was just wondering what that meant or what that particular person did. I mean, my voice teacher helps me with all my songs and the cuts and such so what more (other than the monologue part) does an audition coach help with?

you know i went to ithaca last year. pm me to remind me (because sometimes i forget stuff...), and i'll tell you about my acting teacher. she was truly incredible and was a HUGE help in getting me re-motivated. hopefully, you haven't been to orientation and signed up for classes yet, but if you have, you MAY be able to contact her and get an override.

i can also tell you a little about the other acting teachers from what i've heard from others to help you decide which one would be your best bet.

there's also a guy who can help with song interpretation for auditions/stuff like that. he's in the music dept. and is the musical director for some of the musicals.

That would be fantastic, thank you! I'll be pming you promptly. I'm taking modern dance. 3 hrs a week. Professional training and helping combat the freshman 15 all in 1! ;)

I'm pretty sure an audition coach is like an acting coach--they help with choosing monologues, cutting the monologue if necessary, also working on basic audition fundamentals. I'm pretty sure that's audition coach, whereas an acting coach would help you with just how to act the monologue.

Hi BroadwayBound, sorry about that. I don't know how to change my settings to get private messages. It's not a big secret but I don't want to get in trouble, am I allowed to post coach names on the board?? (Here I go, posting them! Living on the edge)
