Activities for the outdoor oriented types

My kid loves being on the water. Wondering if there are opportunities for scuba diving and/or surf fishing around the New Orleans area?

No scuba diving that I’ve ever heard of in NOLA but fishing is plentiful. Can probably find diving opportunities in AL, MS or FL.

Yes, fishing is practically the official sport of Louisiana. It does look like there is scuba diving along the gulf coast, which is easy access from NOLA. Here is a dive shop in NOLA that I am sure would have all the info you want: http://www.harrysdiveshop.com/</a> Also, I found this class (https://tulane.edu/calendar/event-details.cfm?uid=3319A64A-C8F6-37B5-0608266044D64DC6</a>) that the Reilly Center (that is the huge recreation center at Tulane that has the workout facilities, the pools, courts, and regularly holds classes in things like martial arts, etc.) held back in 2010. They certainly may have had some since then, this was a random find. But they are always open to helping students organize these kinds of things when there is interest.

In fact, while I saw (http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/studentprograms/adviser-list.cfm</a>) rowing, sailing and swimming have clubs at Tulane, I didn’t see one for scuba. I do see diving, but that is ambiguous if they mean platform/springboard diving or scuba. If it is not the latter, then your child can start a scuba club by getting only 10 (I think) people that are interested and they can become an official club. That makes it easier to get meeting space, use Reilly to hold classes/demonstrations, and get the university to kick in some money to make it easier to get transportation to dive spots, for example.

Thanks for the quick replies. Will check out the diving opportunities along gulf coast in a couple of weeks - I will post back with what we learn.

@6kids2boxers1cat‌ - Did you ever find anything out about this?

It looks like most of the diving is more towards Florida panhandle. I do think he will dive an oil rig while there. The drive over to Florida isn’t that bad so I am sure some opportunities will open up.

The drive is very easy. The research group I was in drove to Tallahassee a couple of times because Florida State had a particular piece of equipment we didn’t. Piece of cake, and I got to learn about Whataburger. I was relieved, actually, because until I actually saw the sign I had thought they were saying Waterburgers, which obviously sound gross.
