Activities for the Sober

What do kids do on the weekends that doesn't involve getting drunk or high? Are there group activities where non-drinkers will feel comfortable?

Definitely, and this is especially true if you're living on a sub-free ("healthy living," I think) floor. There are always your standard movie nights, board game nights, etc, but the Performing Arts Department is usually doing something or another that will interest you. Plus, Ursa's (one of the food places on campus that basically only serves sweet things... ohh Ursa's) has "Ursa's Night Life" on weekends that I think has karaoke, games, etc. Plus, don't forget that we're in St. Louis. Kids go shopping, go to movies (there's a great arts theater within walking distance), go to the Loop, go bowling at the Tropicana... Plus seriously you could always just go to parties and not drink, which I know plenty of people do. There's always dancing and good (albeit extremely loud) music.

Do you know anything about the substance-free floors? Would I be labeled a nerd if I lived in one?

The sub free floors tend to be quieter and less social than the normal floors. If you don't want to be around alcohol at all then I would choose one, otherwise you can definitely live in a non sub free floor, be social and not drink.

Definitely not, don't worry about it.

D is Fr on sub-free floor that is very social and creative in their merry-making. Kids from non-sub-free floors often migrate to D's sub-free floor when they get bored with drinking-oriented parties.

er, sorry, I should've been specific as to what I was replying.

"Would I be labeled a nerd if I lived in one?"

Definitely not, don't worry about it.

What about putting down on housing form, "I plan to use my room primarily for study purposes" and being in substance-free dorm. Do most people not put that down?

What is important is being honest on your housing form. That will facilitate you being placed with the best match. I wouldn't feel bad at all about answering that on the housing form!

I put down that I wanted to use my room for study purposes...i think around half of people put that down.

as a sidenote, at least half of the best people i know lived sub-free freshman yr.

I would like to use my room for socializing and studying. I really would prefer to room with someone who is substance-free, but did not request that because I thought that would increase my chances of ending up on a quiet and less social hall. However, after reading these posts it seems like a lot of people request sub. free. What percentage of the freshman would you say do? Are these dorms a lot quieter than the other dorms?
